Harry Potter, 20 years

Two decades ago, on June 26, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” was officially published. This marked the beginning of the phenomenal 20th Century literature that skyrocketed its success into the hands of millions of readers around the globe. Soon, J.K. Rowling’s art piece inspired a major motion picture that brought the tale of Harry Potter to life. Without further ado, here’s a look back at our Favorite characters:

Favorite Characters from Harry Potter

Dobby. There is something about a house elf that makes them an ideal friend. And Dobby, is one of the greatest supporters Harry Potter has ever had. After turning his back from the maltreating family of the Malfoys to save his friend, he definitely earns himself the title as one of bravest characters in the “Harry Potter” series. In his death, he remains as one of the well-loved magical creatures.

Remus Lupin. Despite his being a half-blood wizard, this professor sure has kickass wizardly powers. Along with this, his being a werewolf makes him a standout from all the rest. Why he is one of the favorites is easy: he is one of Hogwarts’ greatest teachers. A great teacher is someone who inspires his students with his incredible talent and encourages them to perform their best. Thanks to him, his students are shaped into exceptional practitioners of magic.

Other than this, he is a family man. In all the magic that he’s mastered, concealment charms are his craft. This is because he’s so devoted to protecting his family, that he learns all the magic to keep them safe. Long story short, he’s pretty freaking awesome.

Ron Weasley. In the “Harry Potter” series, Ron is Harry’s greatest sidekick. Now, this doesn’t make him just a sidekick. In fact, his presence makes the story so much more interesting and comedic. His antics– intentional or not– are constant reminders that we can be fools most times. And that when we’re in situations that feel insurmountable, just say: ‘Bloody hell’ and get on with it.

Hermoine Granger. A big thank you hug for Hermoine who constantly saves the day with her smartass remarks and book smarts. Hilariously enough, her greatest fear is actually failing the exams. In fact, she’s been tagged as a ‘know-it-all’– and she sure owns it. What makes her a favorite other than her wittiness, is her ability to calmly handle silly situations. Ahem, except that one time when she punched Malfoy in the face.

Severus Snape. Everyone knew Snape as initially, the annoying Potion professor who found pleasure in putting Harry Potter in detention. This angry man had a thorn in his heart ever since losing his greatest love, Lily. Although as the story progresses, we learn that Snape isn’t all that evil. And that he spends every waking day to redeem himself for his callous mistakes. This is what makes him a favorite– his desire to repent and be a good man.

Never forget: ‘Always.’

Albus Dombledore. Dombledore is famous for his clever lines that are absolute quotable quotes. Other than this, the headmaster of Hogwarts is also famous for revealing the greatest magic of all: Love. This character is most-loved for his wisdom and candor. He is an example of humility despite greatness– he admits his mistakes and moves on from them. In fact, for such a powerful wizard, he had so much faith in Harry Potter and believed that he could learn a lot from him.

Harry Potter. Of course, he’s here. He’s ‘The Boy Who Lived,’ ‘The Chosen One.’ His pureness is something that makes him genuine. Not once was Harry even tempted by the Dark Arts. And in all the burdens that he’s carried, he never turned his back from his responsibilities. He stood tall facing all the rocks that were thrown at him, and his heart shone like gold– yearning only for belongingness and a family. This is a protagonist that deserves the ‘Hero’ card.

He may be a little hotheaded and reckless sometimes, but his mistakes make him all the more human. All the more relatable for the ordinary person.
