The public weather forecast issued by DOST-PAGASA on August 13 at 5:00 pm reports that three tropical storms have been spotted outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). Tropical storm Leepi, tropical depression Yagi (previously known as “Karding”), and tropical storm Bebinca are all causing the ongoing southwest monsoon rains in Luzon. Rains will persist until August 15 (Wednesday) and by August 16 (Thursday), the weather is expected to improve.
PAGASA also states that a low pressure area developed inside PAR which was located about 920 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes as of 4:00 pm, August 13.
“Leepi” was found 1,820 kms at the east northeast of extreme parts of North Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 90 kilometers per hour. “Yagi,” on the other hand, is currently outside the country, while “Bebinca” is currently at the Pacific Ocean.
Luzon Residents Advised to Stay On Alert
Since heavy monsoon rains are expected in the areas of Ilocos, the Cordillera, Batanes, the Babuyan Group of Islands, Bataan, and Zambales, PAGASA urges the residents in Luzon to stay on high alert, especially for landslides and floods.
ABS-CBN states that a total of 1, 057, 767 people are affected due to the heavy rains and incidents of flash floods over the weekend. These residents are from 713 barangays in Region 1, Region 2, Calabarzon, the Cordillera Administrative Region, and Manila. Among those affected, 59, 100 were forced to flee their homes with the majority already at evacuation centers, NDRRMC reports.
Classes are still suspended for Tuesday in a number of areas. Classes have been suspended in all levels for Abra, Benguet, including Baguio City; Marikina, Central Colleges of the Philippines; and areas in Ilocos Sur, La Union, Bulacan, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Rizal, and Zambales. Classes in Pre-school to Senior High School are suspended at Camiling, Tarlac.
The areas of Visayas and Mindanao, although not affected by the southwest monsoon, will experience thunderstorms.
