3-Year-Old Boy Dies After Power Window Accident

Another toddler has died after sustaining injuries when he was caught accidentally in a car’s power window. Everton Isay Romero Romero of Schuyler town, Nebraska died on April 20, five days after the accident happened.

According to MSN, the toddler was seated in the back seat of the family’s Chevy Equinox 2007 when the window was activated and caught him in the neck. Police who responded to the scene said it was unclear how long the boy was trapped.

Power Windows As Safety Hazards For Kids

The 3-year-old did not regain consciousness after the incident, and according to a Fox News report, he died while in the Omaha hospital where he was brought. The mother reportedly turned off the power windows of the car before she left her child in the parked car. Both her and the police are at a loss how it was activated.

The Colfax County Attorney also declared that no law has been violated. The mother was said to have “acted appropriately the entire time.”

This incident once again brings to fore how power windows have long been safety hazards for young children. According to MSN, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded over 50 deaths due to similar accidents since 1990.

Safety Features Should Be Mandatory

NHTSA has not required the installation of anti-pinch technology that detects if an object is present and automatically retracts the window. Their studies showed that it did not pose that big a risk. However, most car manufacturers nowadays voluntarily provide this.

In the case of the 2007 Chevy Equinox, it was not clear whether the car had this feature. The company made this mandatory since 2009, according to the MSN report.

Danger To Kids And Adults Alike

According to Kids and Cars, the force of a power window being raised is between 30 to 80 pounds. Only 22 pounds of force is enough to injure an infant or suffocate a toddler. Adults have reported injuries related to power windows as well, but not as worse as children.
