The search is over! After months of waiting, a lot of changes, and 300 auditionees, ABS CBN has finally found their Darna in Jane de Leon. From a pool of recognized actresses who were nominated to be Darna such as Nadine Lustre, Kathryn Bernardo, and Maja Salvador, de Leon came out on top. According to ABS Films Consultant Malou Santos, de Leon is a perfect fit for the role. She embodied the innocence and strength of character needed to tell the genesis and coming of age story of Darna. But, who is Jane de Leon? Before bagging the role of a lifetime, Jane de Leon’s showbiz career was only starting to bloom. And now, people are clamoring to know who she is. Here are 5 things we know about the new and upcoming Darna ready to take flight:

1. Growing Up Dreaming of Stardom

Jane de Leon’s name may just have started to earn recognition but, this 20-year-old actress has already been aiming for the limelight since she was young. De Leon or “Chynese” as called by her family started her career by joining pageants at an early age. She won the title of Ms. Photogenic in a Little Ms. San Roque competition. Then in 2013, she got into the semi-finals of Supermodel Philippines according to Esquire. She only started acting in 2014.

2. A Fresh Faced Actress

De Leon’s first acting role was with the KathNiel love team in “Be Careful With My Heart.” She played as Daniel Padilla’s friend who Kathryn Bernardo’s character got jealous of. And after that, she went on to appear in a couple of ABS shows like “Maalalaala Mo Kaya,” “La Luna Sangre,” and “Wansapanataym.” More recently, she took a starring role in an episode of “Ipaglaban Mo” as Tere, a lesbian rape victim fighting for justice. Aside from that, de Leon is best known for her role on “Halik” as Jerico Rosales’ younger sister.

Aside from acting, de Leon is also talented in the musical area. She can sing as well as play the drums and guitar. In fact, she’s a former member of the “It’s Showtime” girl group “Girltrends.” Afterwhich, she became a solo artist.

3. Mommy’s Girl

In an interview with Village Pipol, de Leon revealed that she greatly looks up to her mom. She even likens herself to her mom saying that she’s also a fighter and doesn’t give up easily like her mom. Their family has gone through a lot and it’s obvious that de Leon sees her mom as a hero.

“My mom’s a very strong woman, who was able to beat hardships both in life and in health. She underwent four major surgeries and went through tough times when my dad was hospitalized up until he passed away. I know being a single parent is hard for her, but she manages to do it for me and my kuya,” she said. 

4. Philophobia

One interesting fact about Jane de Leon is that she has philophobia, the fear of falling in love. According to her interview with Village Pipol, she has a fear of falling in love with the wrong person. And she finds it hard to trust anyone in the industry she’s in. The good thing is she’s not rushing to fall in love any time soon. Right now, she says she wants to focus on what’s keeping her busy – her career, family, and goals in life.

5. Jane’s Angels

Though de Leon’s schedule is surely going to be loaded now that she’s taking on the role of Darna, the young star is also gearing up for a couple of projects for her fans whom she calls “Angels.” She revealed that plenty more vlogs and song covers are coming to her YouTube page for her fans. According to de Leon, she’s set on putting more effort on her online presence to engage with her fans. “Afterall, I owe it all to my Angels for giving me their love and support. I truly love them all! Of course, above all things, I am so grateful and thankful for all the blessings that God has been giving me,” she said in her interview with Village Pipol. Jane de Leon might be relatively new but, she’s already ready to take on the charge.
