Did you know that the band Cup of Joe debuted in 2019 while they were still in school? This group of friends from Saint Louis University Laboratory High School decided to form a band while in school and have been making music together ever since.

A last-minute decision inspired the band’s name.

Their name came out of nowhere when they needed a name for an upcoming event. Ironically, coffee is not a big part of their lives, even though it plays a role in their branding and sound.

“Actually, the name Cup of Joe biglaan lang siya because there was this event that was about to start and we needed a name for the band. So ayun hindi naman sa na-pressure kami (pero) biglang ko na lang naisip na Cup of Joe. ‘What if Cup of Joe na lang?’ Then they said, ‘Sige, OK na yun.’ There’s no inspiration (behind the name).” – Gab

The band’s name has since taken on a deeper meaning as time passed, symbolizing their unique sound and the different music blends they release.

They all come from different provinces.

Despite being based in Baguio, the members of Cup of Joe come from different provinces, such as Pangasinan, Isabela, and Abra. CJ, Gian, Rapha, and Gab hail from Pangasinan, Sevii is from Isabela, and Xen originates from Abra. Their diverse backgrounds and influences contribute to their distinct sound and make them stand out in the music scene.

They uploaded their debut track to Spotify for fun.

Cup of Joe’s first-ever single, Nag-iisang Muli, was initially released on Spotify simply for fun and as a way to commemorate their graduation from senior high.

However, the track unexpectedly caught the attention of listeners in Metro Manila, leading it to chart on Spotify Philippines.

They are all students pursuing different degrees.

As if being a talented musician wasn’t impressive enough, all members of Cup of Joe are also juggling their studies. From Electrical Engineering to Dentistry and Medical Technology, these passionate individuals prove that pursuing one’s passion doesn’t have to be limited to just one field.

Their songs are inspired by their experiences in Baguio.

The beautiful city of Baguio is not only the birthplace of Cup of Joe but also a major inspiration for their music.

In an interview, the band shared that the environment and emotions they associate with Baguio have greatly influenced their songwriting process.

We incorporated the emotions that we could relate to the imagery or scenery kung nasaan kami. Feeling ko naman may ganun,” Gian shares in a Philippine Star interview.

They have a dedicated fan base called “Joewahs.”

Cup of Joe’s fans are known as Joewahs, a term coined by the band. It plays on their band name and has since become an endearing term for their supporters. Joewahs continue supporting and rooting for Cup of Joe in their musical journey, from attending their shows to streaming their music.

Cup of Joe is the number 1 most-streamed Filipino OPM Band on Spotify Philippines.

On November 19, the band snagged the top spot on the Spotify Philippines Daily Top OPM (Original Pilipino Music) Groups chart, overtaking Ben&Ben. Can you believe it? Ben&Ben had been ruling the chart for 697 days, just one day before they would have completed two whole years at number one.

“From jamming in our school to topping charts – overwhelmed and grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it,” Cup of Joe on social media.

This achievement is a testament to their growing popularity and solid fan base in the country.
