Check out theaters this week and catch four new films that will have you on the edge of your seat or laugh hysterically with your friends. There’s always a little something for everybody at the cinema. This week’s line-up includes Can We Still Be Friends?, The Recall, Once Upon A Time In Venice, and Despicable Me 3. Maybe you want a classic rom-com to feed your romantic soul. Something sweet, funny, and guaranteed to have a happy ending. In that case, “Can We Still Be Friends?” is the one for you. If your tastes lie in something a little darker, then maybe you should check out Bruce Willis in “Once Upon A Time In Venice.” This dark comedy comes with a splash of fast-paced action and morbid humor. Jury’s out on the happy ending, though. Of course, if you’re a sci-fi nut then you might want to give “The Recall” a chance. This movie gives the “group of teenagers stay in a cabin in the woods and get into trouble” trope a new twist. One might even say it’s “out of this world.” And let’s not forget the latest addition to the Illumination Entertainment family: “Despicable Me 3.” What better film to watch as a family than one that reunites two long-lost brothers in a heartwarming and hilarious way? Gerald Anderson and Arci Muñoz’s new project explores what happens to a couple when their eight-year-old relationship fizzles out. Anderson and Muñoz star as Digs and Sam, whose lovey-dovey romance slowly burns out over the years. Bored and frustrated with each other, they break up… but can’t seem to stay away from each other. Their friends make their break-up into a competition on who can get over the other the quickest. But moving on is easier said than done. As the competition gets hotter, so do the sparks between them. Eventually, Digs and Sam must ask themselves: “Can We Still Be Friends?” When a weekend getaway goes totally wrong. Five friends. A weekend at an isolated cabin in the woods. Guns and old military equipment. A mysterious guy (Wesley Snipes) warning them to leave. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. And you’d be right. “The Recall” gives a sci-fi twist to the old “cabin movie” genre as five friends learn of an alien invasion happening right under their noses. Suddenly their carefree trip away turns into a heart-pounding nightmare as they fight to not get killed or abducted. Sci-fi fans might want to check this one out. Bruce Willis fights for his dog back. Think “John Wick” but with more wisecracks, more hijinks, and more drugs. That’s right. Bruce Willis stars as Steve, a private investigator who ends up working with a drug dealer called Spyder (Jason Momoa) after his dog is kidnapped. Spyder forces Steve to do some jobs for him in order to get his dog back. Sounds simple enough. What could possibly go wrong? Prepare for some high-paced action scenes, hilarious wisecracks, and a showdown between Willis and Momoa over Buddy the dog. If you want a dark comedy, then look no further than “Once Upon A Time In Venice.” Gru returns to his criminal ways. “Despicable Me 3” tosses Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) a curveball in the heroic journey he took in the last two movies. When his long-lost and more charming twin brother Dru (also voiced by Steve Carell) suddenly shows up, he tempts Gru into revisiting his criminal past. Things only get more complicated from there. The Minions end up in prison, swiftly taking it over from the other inmates. A new 80s-inspired villain Balthazar Bratt (voiced by Trey Parker) stirs up trouble with plans for world domination. And it seems that there might be more to Dru than his easy-going charm. Can Gru pull off the hero thing for a third time, or will he go back to being a villain with his new brother? Want to watch a film where a lone hero basically takes on a whole war? Or are you in a nostalgic mood for an ancient Egyptian princess trying to take over the world?
