Mallory Grossman, suicide, cyberbullying, lawsuit

The parents of 12-year old Mallory Grossman, the young girl who committed suicide in June, have decided to file a lawsuit against the Rockaway Township School District for not addressing their daughter’s complaints of bullying online. Mallory’s mother Diane believed that her daughter took her own life after months of being bullied by some of her classmates.

In a press conference, the parents through their legal counsel Attorney Bruce Nagel announced that they will first file a notice of intent to sue to the school district.

School District Was Negligent, Mallory’s Parents Say

According to the Washington Post, Atty. Nagel said that the messages were “vile and malicious.” Mallory was called a “loser” who had “no friends” and this happened not only in social media but also in person.

Another report in NJ.com said that her mother noticed in the weeks before she killed herself, she began to feel afraid when going to school. This was strange behavior for her because she was a happy child and she was doing well in school.

In one of the final messages to her, her bullies suggested: “Why don’t you kill yourself?” Her mother reported all these incidents to the school but did not see any action done to address it. She said, “We feel we followed the school’s protocol. We started low on the totem pole and worked our way up until it finally made its way to the principal. Their words were, ‘We’ll investigate it, we’ll look into it.'” She also added that even if the school acted on their complaint, she feels it was not enough.

Pinpointing The Bullies

Atty. Nagel also said that they were contemplating on going after the parents of the students who are involved in the bullying. In another report, the mother was able to talk to one of the parents the day before Mallory’s death, but this was dismissed by the other parent.
