This week’s movie playlist surely opens the month of July with much anticipation, especially with the return of Scott Lang in Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp featuring Hollywood A-Listers Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Included this week are box office hits “The Maid in London” starring Matt Evans and Andi Eigenman; “Siberia” with Keanu Reeves and Ana Ularu; and finally, Eve Hewson and Avan Jogia in “Paper Year.” So, let’s get to know a bit more about these films so you can decide on your pick of the week.

Movie Mix July 4: From Superheroes to Real Life Experiences, the Cinema surely Hits a Spot

Ant-Man and the Wasp take place about two years after “Captain America: Civil War.”  The story centers on Scott Lang trying to work things out as a father and as Ant-Man while being under house arrest because of what transpired in Civil War. Things begin to get jet-packed when Hope van Dyne (otherwise known as “The Wasp” played by Evangeline Lilly) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) brings to light a new mission that can reveal the unknown secrets from the past. The duo, Ant-Man, and the Wasp, is thus born. One thing to look forward to is seeing how Michelle Pfeiffer’s character, Janet van Dyne, pulls the whole plot together. Other actors in the film include Michael Peña, Hannah John-Kamen, Walter Goggins, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, T.I., David Dastmalchian, Divian Ladwa, and more.

Matt Evans and Andi Eigenmann team up in rom-com “The Maid in London.”  The film tells the story of a young woman named Margo who, like any other Filipino wanting to have a better life and help the family, chooses to go to London and work as a domestic helper leaving her boyfriend Ben (Matt). In the UK, she struggles because of being an illegal alien continuously hiding to avoid deportation. Such a sentiment is something that most OFW’s and a lot of Flipino audiences will be able to relate to making the film a must-watch. Polo Ravales, Joshua de Guzman, Alexis Navarro, Rina Reyes, Janice Jurado, Tere Gonzales, Jun Nayra and Richard Manabat also start in the film.

Romantic crime thriller “Siberia” shows the conflict between diamonds and love. Keanu Reeves, Ana Ularu, Pasha Lychnikoff and Molly Ringwald star in this film directed by Matthew Ross. The plot revolves around an American diamond merchant who goes to Russia to sell blue diamonds of rare quality. He then falls in love with an owner of a Russian cafe in Siberia making it difficult for him to get away from the world of diamond trade.

Rebecca Addelman’s “Paper Year” is all about a couple’s struggle in their first year of marriage. When a goofy couple from Los Angeles Franny Winters (Eve) and Dan Delaney (Avan) tie the knot quite impulsively, they soon realize that marriage isn’t as expected. Both being unemployed, they begin to feel the challenges of making ends meet and accepting their differences. This makes them see that being mature adults in a marriage is essential but not easy. The film has that certain humor and honesty to it that brings modern-day issues about what a young couple’s first year of marriage is really like.
