Image from official Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer (screenshot) Share on Facebook Share on Twitter One of the biggest reveals this Comic Con has to be the official trailer of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. All things considered, the trailer is just choc-full of fan service. It seems to follow the lines of the original Ghidora: the Three-headed Monster, featuring Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidora himself. Strangely, Legendary Pictures seems to have made the decision to use the word “titan” in place of “kaiju.” Boo. Still, one word is not that big of a deal, especially with that final clip of jets flanking a roaring Godzilla. She is also often depicted as a protector, contrast to Godzilla who embodies destruction. Mothra is usually shown as a powerful psionic being, capable of communicating with humans. If this fact does not lead to contention with Godzilla, it builds the possibility that Mothra may be an ally instead. It also makes her a candidate for a heartbreaking on-screen death. It may also be a reference to “Fire Rodan,” given the streams of lava along his back. Rodan is notable as an enemy of King Ghidora, and has fought both alongside and against Godzilla in his previous incarnations. He is among the most powerful kaiju, and in the past has required the combined might of Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan to defeat. King of the Monsters Plot and Predictions Who are we kidding? we know who’s gonna win in the end. After all, we know there’s a Godzilla vs King Kong reboot scheduled for 2020. When predicting how King of the Monsters will end, it’s less about who wins, and more about how. We know Legendary is banking on pleasing fans worldwide. Toho has always promoted the three-headed King Ghidora as Godzilla’s arch-rival, so it makes sense that the film’s climax will be a one on one fight between the two. To that end, we suspect two possible buildups. The first and less likely scenario is that King of the Monsters will be a series of fights between each of the major titans, possibly with a few minor battles in-between. This approach will have a boss fight gauntlet until King Ghidora reveals himself for a final encounter. The more likely scenario is that the movie will be a series of small skirmishes, with all titans facing off in a final battle against Ghidora. While this sounds like the more exciting version, it is also the more difficult plot to pull off. This is because without any monster casualties early on, the film would probably focus more on the human characters. And let’s face it, sitting through that would be boring. Facebook Comments
