The Flash Season 3 Episode 9 Recap — Alchemy’s Origins — Popcorn Time

Now that the Invasion is over and Team Flash has resumed their normal state of affairs, it’s time to see what the gang has been up to. The Flash Season 3 Episode 9: “The Present” delves into the origins of Doctor Alchemy. We’ve got a load of stuff to discuss here, so be warned: SPOILER ALERT.

Julian Albert Becomes Alchemy; Wally West Becomes Kid Flash

The episode begins with a flashback to four years ago, when Julian Albert (Tom Felton) was an aspiring scientist. He is shown at an archaeological dig site, where he discovers an ancient stone box. Opening the artifact, he is met with a flash of light before the show cuts to the present.

In the present day, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) discovers Julian’s connection to the artifact, called the Brahmastra. Julian had written a dissertation on the stone during his time at Oxford University. Barry (Grant Gustin) confronts Julian about the artifact, but the latter lies about the successful find.

Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) continues his training. Under HR’s (Tom Cavanagh) tutelage, he discovers that he is faster than Barry was at the same stage of training. They choose to keep Wally’s progress a secret from the rest of the team.

Barry Reaches for Jay Garrick; Savitar Reaches for Cisco

Barry gets help from Earth 3’s Flash — Jay Garrick (John Wesley Snipp) — who tells him of Savitar’s ascension into perceived godhood. Together, they track down Alchemy and the rest of Savitar’s cult. Jay faces off against Savitar only to find that he is outmatched. Barry knocks Alchemy out however, and takes possession of the Brahmastra. He places it in its stone container, and Savitar vanishes just as he is about to finish Jay. Barry captures and unmasks Alchemy, finally discovering his secret identity: Julian Albert.

Throughout the episode, Cisco experiences hallucinations of his deceased brother Dante (Nicholas Gonzalez). The hallucinations lead to Cisco opening the Brahmastra’s stone box, releasing Savitar once more. As it turns out, Savitar is capable of entering people’s thoughts even when the Brahmastra is sealed. Wally attempts to help Flash, but Savitar brushes his attacks off. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) somehow manages to break through to Cisco, and the latter closes the artifact. Savitar vanishes for the second time.

Warnings of the Future; Savitar’s Prophecy

With the help of Team Flash, Julian is able to summon Savitar’s consciousness. The deity reveals ominous details of the team’s future. He warns that one of the team will betray them, another will die, and one will suffer a fate worse than death. He reveals hatred for Barry, stating that it was Barry who condemned him for eternity.

The team decides to dispose of the Brahmastra. Because it is indestructible, they come up with a plan to lock it in the Speedforce itself. As Barry throws the artifact however, the dimensional rift pulls him five months into the future. it is here he witnesses Iris’s (Candace Patton) death at the hands of Savitar. Barry is distraught, but Jay tells him that the future he saw is only one of many, and that it may not even happen. He teaches him that the present is more important than one of an infinite number of futures.

Christmas with Team Flash

Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and his girlfriend Cecille Horton (Danielle Nicolette) whip up eggnog for their friends. They exchange gifts, with Wally receiving his Kid Flash costume. He appears ecstatic, especially considering his family’s hostility to HR for training him. Julian shows up at the West household as well, and presents Barry with his own gift: Barry’s reinstatement as a CSI detective. Some carolers show up, and HR remarks how sad it is that the children are caroling in the rain. Caitlin responds by using her powers to make it snow.

As everyone winds down, Barry and Iris exchange their gifts. Barry asks Iris to close her eyes, and he whisks her away to a new apartment. He tells her it’s theirs, and he expresses how he wants to focus on the here and now no matter what the future brings. Iris replies by saying she got him a wallet. The episode ends as they kiss.
