Well here we are again with another recap of Arrow. Things are picking up this in Season 5 Episode 5. The last time we saw Oliver and his ragtag team of recruits, they were in a bit of a pinch: Wild Dog (Rick Gonzalez) had decided to get into a one-on-one fistfight with Tobias Church (Chad L. Coleman)… which in turn led to Wild Dog’s capture. So what happens next? Well before we go there… Spoiler alert.
Arrow Season 5 Episode 5: The Hunt For A Wild Dog
The episode opens up with a blurry montage of torture procedures Wild Dog suffered at the hands of Tobias Church. We get a gruesome idea of what he went through as well. Church tells a bruised and battered Rene the story of the last person who he tortured, telling him how he eventually got what he wanted from him. We then cut to Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), Artemis (Madison McLaughlin), and Ragman (Joe Dinicol) tearing up the streets in search of Church and Rene.
And I swear… how are they at the losing end? Ragman eats half a clip from an SMG like popping candy.
Anyway, they manage to get a location on Wild Dog, who is in the middle of literally digging his own grave. Oliver rescues Rene, but we find out quickly that Rene was tortured so much, he couldn’t remember giving up Oliver’s name to Church.
Arrow Season 5 Episode’s Flashback: Oliver Is Officialy Bratva.
The flashback sequences of this episode show us Oliver’s official induction into the Bratva. He is evaluated by three heads of the elusive organization, including Anatoly Knyazev (David Nykl).
One of the heads however – Viktor (Mike Dopud) – doesn’t believe Oliver is truly a member of the Bratva. He wants Oliver dead, and with the help of a beautiful damsel in distress, his men lure him out of the party to get him alone.
Mayor Queen Is A Human Target
Oliver finds himself in Church’s crosshairs. Despite a second warning from Prometheus to stay away from the Green Arrow, Tobias Church hires a masked assassin codenamed “Scimitar” (Curtis Braconnier) to kill the Mayor.
It’s a busy day at City Hall for Oliver. First, he manages to cut a deal with media personnel Susan Williams (Carly Pope) to give him a month to prove he can be an effective mayor. She seems interested, and gives Oliver her personal phone number. Oliver later leaves City Hall after blackmailing a corrupt politician (Greg Rogers) to support his plans for low-income housing.
And what kind of plot twist do we get? Scimitar ambushes Oliver as he walks down City Hall’s steps, shooting him multiple times in the chest. Damn. But then it’s revealed to us that Oliver Queen at City Hall was never Oliver Queen. Rather, he was Christopher Chance – another DC Comics hero – played by Wil Traval. He goes by the name “Human Target,” and he is a master of disguise who specializes in infiltration. And taking bullets for his clients. As it turns out, Chance and Queen had actually met before. The Human Target saved Oliver’s life from the Bratva thugs Viktor had sent to kill him.
The End Of Tobias Church
As Church believes the Green Arrow is dead, he makes his move along the waterfront, gathering all the criminal families of five cities together. However, his meeting is interrupted by Team Arrow, who was given a location thanks to Wild Dog and John Diggle (David Ramsey). Wild Dog and Church get into another brawl, this time ending with Church running from the vigilante. He tries to escape, only to run into the Green Arrow, who finally takes him into custody.
Finally, the episode ends with Tobias Church’s death. Prometheus attacks Church’s prison transfer, and we listen to him doing his handiwork. Screams, gunshots, and slicing steel can be heard. Prometheus murders the entire police detail before he and Church come face to face. As clever and ruthless as Church has been portrayed so far, he attempts to bargain for his life by offering the Green Arrow’s name… and yet he gives the name before the vengeful Prometheus agrees to any kind of deal. The episode ends with Prometheus walking away from the slaughter.
Episode 6 possibilities: Prometheus Reveals Himself To Team Arrow?
And that was it. Episode 5. I’m kind of disappointed that Church ended his role in the series that easily, but I suppose we knew from the get-go he wasn’t the main villain anyway. And if anything, he serves as excellent buildup to Prometheus. Oliver will undoubtedly be all over the case of Church’s death, which means he will likely be investigating Prometheus. Will they finally meet? Excited for what happens next? I am. Catch up again with me next week on Popcorn Time.
Oh and before I forget… As the climax of the episode dies down, Oliver and Felicity get a chance to talk. They come to some form of closure over their relationship. Pretty mature of Oliver, in my opinion… especially since Felicity’s new boyfriend Billy Malone (Tyler Ritter) will be working in Oliver’s Anti Crime Unit.
