Temperature in Atok Caused ‘Winter Effect’ and Frost on Crops

The Office of the Civil Defense in Cordillera reported on the drop in temperature in Atok, Benguet mid-morning of Feb. 16. The report was in a form of a post on Facebook with photos showing evidence of the temperature drop.

The post also came with photos by Philip John Haight showing frost that covered the vegetables in Atok creating a ‘winter effect’ on the crops.

The Municipality of Atok is a municipality in the province of Benguet. It is located at the central portion of Benguet and is bounded by Kibungan on the North, Bokod on the southeast, Tublay on the south-west and Kapangan on the west.

The highest point in the Philippine Highway System is located in this municipality just along the Halsema Highway and has a mountainous terrain with many steep cliffs. Atok is 48 kilometers away from Baguio City.

During the coldest months of the year, temperature hits 9 degrees Celsius which is a bit normal for settlers and farmers in the area. This kind of temperature already causes frost to settle on the ground destroying crops. So reaching a temperature of -2 degrees is something alarming.
