The historic “Yes” vote happened on Nov. 14, and makes way for the legalization of marriage equality through Parliament. Celebrities as well as political figures took to Twitter to celebrate with the Australians. Celebrities Tweet, Rejoice With Australia Among the celebrities who joined the Twitter storm with the hashtag MarriageEquality was Ellen DeGeneres, who praised the country and its citizens for the vote with a “Way To Go, Australia.” Australian singer Kylie Minogue also celebrated with her countrymen with the tweet: “Love is love, always was love, always will be love.” Apple’s Tim Cook also joined the fray, with a congratulatory tweet, while hailing it as “Another important step toward equality for all.” The very hip and social media savvy Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also said his piece: “Love wins in Australia. Thrilled to hear Australians have voted in favour of legalizing same-sex marriage.” Eccentric singer and musician Sia, who is also Australian, tweeted with the hashtag LoveIsLove. Miley Ray Cyrus on the other hand, alluded to her Australian boyfriend while at the same time congratulating the country for taking one step closer to world peace. Finally, Sydney Opera House tweeted a photo of the opera house lighted up like a rainbow in celebration of the “yes” vote. Next Step Towards Marriage Equality According to the New York Times, of the 12.1 million Australians who voted during the survey, 61.6 per cent voted in favor of marriage equality while 38.4 per cent were not in favor. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull sees it as public support for this new social policy. “Now it is up to us, here in the Parliament of Australia, to get on with the job Australians have tasked us to do,” he declared. He also vowed to push for legislation, targeting to be done by December. It’s a g’day.
