In its final webinar of the Creative Talks series last June 2, BACCI focused on the creative journey of designers. Tioan Medrano, Creative Director of Aramid Design Studio shares her experience in “Designing For With Clients: A Mutual Understanding” last June 2, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. via Zoom.

Undersecretary Ernesto Abella of the Philippine National Commission for UNESCO (UNACOM) welcomed the webinar participants once again, reiterating the importance of discussions and conversations such as these ones organized by BACCI, in promoting creativity and innovation. BACCI Board of Director member Venus Navalta moderated the session.

The Life of a Graphic Designer

Tioan Medrano has over 16 years of experience as a graphic designer. Aside from teaching at the University of the Philippines Baguio College of Arts and Community, she also runs the Aramid Design Studio. With her extensive experience working with different clients, she shared the importance of having a good working relationship between the designer and his or her clients.
Having had her share of both horror stories and success stories, she hopes that her talk will help both designers and clients appreciate the importance of a good relationship.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Medrano began by sharing general guidelines that govern a designer-client relationship: expectations from each party (client = initial ideas, key messages; designer = ideator, brings concept to life), mutual agreement on schedules and timelines, feedback mechanisms, expected outputs, among others.

In her 16 years, she has encountered different types of clients and she created her own typology for these clients. Based on her own experiences, she also learned along the way the best way to manage or work with these clients. For each type of client, she recommends specific action points, all of which will hopefully lead to nurturing a better working relationship, and the success of the collaboration.

Medrano also cited the importance of creating a more enabling environment for designers, especially in Baguio. She specifically proposed coming up with a directory of suppliers and service providers that not only designers can refer to, but also the rest of the creative sectors in the city.

According to Dr. Raymundo Rovillos, BACCI President, there will be a series of workshops where designers like Medrano will be helping out local creatives, artisans, and crafters in July 2021. This is part of BACCI’s project in partnership with UNACOM.

The webinar was live-streamed on the BACCI Facebook page. For more updates on BACCI, please follow their Facebook page.
