Bride of the Water God, Korean Drama

Korean Drama just keeps on making hit television! July is fast approaching, and the audience is hungry for more out-of-this-world, heart-squeezing sarang-baes on screen. Fortunately, and thank the gods for this (especially water god), because there’s a new Korean drama coming to your screens: “Bride of the Water God” (Habaekui Shinboo). The Korean Drama airs in tvN on July 2017 and will be part of GMA’s The Heart of Asia on April 11, 2018.

This 16-episode series will star Shin Se-kyung, an award-winning actress and vocal artist as So-ah, the bride herself. The Water God will be played by Nam Joo-hyuk, an artist who debuted his acting career just recently in 2014. The crowd will be in a real treat for this K-drama series! To prepare yourself for the upcoming fantasy-romance, here are the five things you should know about “Bride of the Water God”:

5 Things You Should Know About K-drama series Bride of the Water God 2017

1. New storyline, New story setting

“Bride of the Water God” is a spin-off of the original Korean manga with the same name. Despite this, there will be glaring differences. For instance, it will be recreated in the modern setting, instead of the original, historical one. Thus, the plot will change. In the Manga Version, a village suffering from drought sacrifices a beautiful girl in hopes of better weather conditions. The girl, So-Ah is then offered to the Water God Ha Baek.

In this modern retelling, it seems as if we are faced with everyday characters who are in an unlikely situation– somewhere along the lines of the webcomic story. Don’t get too down about the radical changes, because the released trailer revealed a very historic-looking Ha Baek. So we may still see glimpses of our ancient deity.

2. No more Ha Baek day version

In the Korean manga, Ha Baek has two versions: a child by day and an adult by night. So-Ah is aware that her husband is the child, Ha Baek. She then falls in love with Mui, Ha Baek’s night version, unaware that it is actually her husband.

In the casting, there was no child version of the Water God. This fact disappointed quite a few fans who have read the manga. Instead, he is merely described as the ‘reincarnation of a water god who is destined to be God’s slave.’

3. New Character: Krystal Jung as Hye-ra

Krystal Jung has been cast as the goddess Hye-ra who, for some reason, has lived among human beings for centuries. As a being with unearthly beauty, she becomes an actress. It is said that she has an unrequited love for the Water God himself. That’s probably the reason why she’s been residing on Earth for so long now– you know, stalker mode: Deity level.

Not surprisingly, Hye-ra will develop a deep hatred for So-Ah for being her man-stealer.

4. Where is Nakbin?

If you don’t know who Nakbin is, she is the first wife of Ha Baek in the manga. Apparently, Ha Baek has this deep love for her, even after her death. She’s a big element of the story since her love for Ha Baek is the central theme of the entire story. Long story short, Nakbin is a character that continues to haunt the characters, creating most of the conflicts and developing the story overall. But where is she in the televised version?

She is nowhere to be found. Does that mean Ha Baek won’t have a first wife? Most likely.

5. Watch out for special guests!

According to Sports World I, “Bride of the Water God” will feature special stars who will take part in the K-drama. Stars include veteran actor Yang Dong-geun and Kang Ha-neul. The roles they will take may be just cameo roles, but nonetheless, it sure adds up to the hype!

“Bride of the Water God” premieres this July 3rd, 2017 in tvN and on GMA’s The Heart Of Asia on April 11, 2018 as reported by GMA news.
