Share on Facebook Share on Twitter The Lazy Sunday Afternoon situation is aptly described by Sweatpants and Coffee founder Nanea Hoffman when she said, “My preferred Sunday mode can best be described as ‘cozy and caffeinated.” We all know how this feels, right? There are some weeks when all we do is look forward to that day off. Absolutely everyone who feels stuck in the daily rut, either the 8-to-5 or adulting, anticipates Sundays and that personal time of quiet, comfort food, coffee, and real conversations. Day in, day out, we hustle just to finally wake up to that Sunday where we get to chill out, rest, and be with those who matter most. This is what Lazy Sundays are all about and it is one thing you’ll always get to feel and have when you spend time at Cafe de Angelo, Baguio City, on any given day of the week. Photo by Moe Abellera Cafe de Angelo is a quaint countryside coffee shop tucked within a dainty garden in Chapis Village along Marcos Highway. Travelers, both local and international, make a pit stop here to refresh or to get that last takeout for the road. Others visit the cafe simply to enjoy everything the place is about – great food, great coffee, a great ambiance – the Lazy Sunday kind (always). Cafe de Angelo set up shop eight years ago serving coffee and organic fresh food selections created and made by hand by Chef Ro Quintos. The coffee selection, on the other hand, is crafted by Chef Ro and Sir Kenneth Miclat of GypsyBrews Nomadic Cafe, the sister company of Cafe de Angelo. Photo by Moe Abellera 3 Reasons Why it’s Always a Lazy Sunday at Cafe de Angelo Baguio The Lazy Sunday experience is real at Cafe de Angelo and we have three reasons why this is so. #1 Everything on the menu is comfort food that is fresh, organic, and hand-made As a barista herself, Chef Ro knows which food selections go well with coffee. She began creating recipes of her own while growing up and got really creative with everything she’d whipped up especially sandwiches. You can say that she makes healthy and particularly desirable sandwiches perfectly well, which is why they’ve become the highlight on Cafe de Angelo’s menu. She also loves working with herbs, elevating the flavor profiles of her other dishes like quesadillas, burritos, burgers, pasta, and rice meals. Every dish she creates is comforting and are the very things you’d need when you’re craving. The most recent addition, the Zoolander Burgers, is nothing short of awesome! These pint-sized chicken and beef sliders are made with some fresh veg and a house dressing that’s hugged by a whole-wheat bun – it is literally a perfect bite! Each mouthful packs a delicious punch of flavor that you’ll keep craving while also being healthy, made from scratch with no artificial flavoring or additives. For just Php180 you get three sliders (your choice of chicken or beef) paired with some rice chips. Photo by Moe Abellera For gatherings with friends and family, or for your business meetings, you can get these Zoolander Burgers with a coffee traveler box. A liter of coffee and some grub is always a good idea! Photo from Cafe de Angelo Facebook Page The coffee shop’s pasta selection is uncomplicated, yet full of flavor. It’s the fresh ingredients that naturally make these dishes unforgettable. If you want that umami experience, try the Chicharon Pasta (Php 160). It’s pasta tossed in basil, microgreens, and some chicharon that we Pinoys love. Their Carbonara (Php 190), on the other hand, is nice and tasty with just the right amount of bacon and white sauce. It’s great for brunch or as a light snack while working. Photo by Moe Abellera Aside from the a la carte menu, you can get that Cafe de Angelo experience to the homes or places of work by trying their Mammoth Burger Box, the Signature Sandwiches Sampler Box, or the Eggie Brekkie. The Mammoth Burger Box comes with three massive burgers of choice: Bacon Burger Box (Php 570), Classic Burger Box (Php550), Kimchi Burger Box (Php 550), and the Assorted Burger Box (Php 580). Photo from Cafe de Angelo Facebook Page Their Signature Sandwiches Sampler Box (Php 780) is an assortment of all signature sandwiches: Egg Sandwich, Baked Chicken, Bacon Bundle, and Sirloin Steak. Photo from Cafe de Angelo Facebook Page The Eggie Brekkie Box (Php 600) comes with two breakfast sandwiches (Eggs Benedict and Hollandaise sauce in Brioche buns), a green salad, and a bottle of Cinnamon Cold Brew — talk about a breakfast bundle for two kings! Photo from Cafe de Angelo Facebook Page There is no reason why you can’t reward yourself for a job well done with these comforting treats every now and then, right? #2 Three Words: Fika & Coffee People Cafe de Angelo brings people together over cups of really good coffee, something familiarly understood as “Fika” by the Swedes. According to Swedish Food, Fika is “a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture that means making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat.” The Swedes that this is most essential to make time for every day. Thanks to Cafe de Angelo’s coffee selection, anyone can enjoy time for Fika whether at home or in the coffee shop. Whatever your mood is on a given day, there’s that cup of coffee to make things right. Cafe de Angelo’s drip coffee is always that go-to selection you’d need. Take your pick from their house blends: the De Angelo Blend, Barako, and Italian Roast. Whether served freshly brewed or bought as coffee drips or pouches, coffee people will surely have a lot to go on with mugs of coffee and those coffee feelings anytime, anywhere. Photo by Moe Abellera The craft coffee selection at Cafe de Angelo, on the other hand, brings out a lot of coffee feelings because of certain combinations. When it comes to coffee, Sir Kenneth is always curious about what goes together with the elixir. The coffee becomes a lot more interesting in the process. He’ll mix up things like orange and coffee, lemon and coffee, tea and coffee combined, cardamom and coffee, or a nitro cold brew. Whatever it is, coffee is limitless to the baristas here. Their Cinnamon Cold Brew (Php200) comes in a rad bottle and will make you want to have an affair with cinnamon. Brewed and steeped for 16 hours or so, you get a non-acidic coffee concentrate that has a mellow robust flavor. A double-shot of this by itself or mixed with some milk is all you need to set your day right! #3 The Coffee Shop feels like a scene taken out of The Secret Garden If you’re a fan of the novel, just sitting and being in Cafe de Angelo’s is similar to what the novelist, Frances Hodgson Burnett, wrote: “Sometimes since I’ve been in the garden I’ve looked up through the trees at the sky and I have had a strange feeling of being happy as if something was pushing and drawing in my chest and making me breathe fast. Magic is always pushing and drawing and making things out of nothing. Everything is made out of magic, leaves and trees, flowers and birds, badgers and foxes and squirrels and people. So it must be all around us. In this garden – in all the places.” It’s that simple, really. When you’re at the cafe enjoying that cup of coffee or that plate of comfort, you do so in a garden that is given some TLC for years. If you grew up in Baguio surrounded by these flowers and plants while growing up, or consider yourself a plantito or a plantita, you’ll understand just how therapeutic and nostalgic everything you see is when you’re here. Coffee, sunshine and flowers in a garden? Come on, it’s the ultimate Sunday State of Mind. Photo by Moe Abellera It’s three reasons (and more) that makes Cafe de Angelo the perfect spot for the Lazy Sun-daze you need. In one of the cafe’s print outs for valued guests, it writes: “Cafe de Angelo is a quaint countryside coffee shop (that) wishes to do away from the fast-paced stressful city life. Kindly understand that our staff carefully, and meticulously prepare your fresh organic meals and beverages by hand… Please practice patience, smile, and have an awesome day!” So, if you need some me-time or some R&R to just get away from it all, “You know the drill,” as Chef Ro would usually say. Cafe de Angelo is located at 54 Chapis Village Road 2600 Baguio City, Philippines. Order your coffee and grub through their Facebook page or via Grab Food. They are also open for dine-in with reservations, strictly no walk-ins. So be sure to call them first or send a message to reserve a table. Photo by Moe Abellera Facebook Comments
