1. The Rise of the Guardians
Who remembers a certain white-haired mischievous boy who wears no shoes and has a staff like Gandalf? If you remember Jack Frost, you’re right on the spot with this one. The Rise of the Guardians is a Christmas movie like no other that brings us to the nostalgia of our innocent childhood holidays.
The Easter Bunny, the Tooth fairy, the Sandman, Santa Claus, and Jack Frost all come together to protect the hopes, dreams, and imagination of the children of the world. And if the humorous banter and the mischievous adventures don’t get you, a slew the film’s most tearjerking and heartwarming moments definitely will.
2. The Polar Express
The Polar Express gives off quite a bit of Mary Poppins vibe Christmas edition. It’s just as fantastic, just as clever, and just as endearing. And it definitely brings back a feeling of innocent pure bliss from all the holiday stories. Santa Claus, his home the north pole, Christmas elves and everything else.
In this film, Billy, a young boy whose Christmas beliefs are being crushed by his family, is visited by a magical train on Christmas eve to take him to the North Pole to meet Santa. On the journey, he makes new friends, discovers the delights of magical self-refilling cups of choco, and of course meets Santa. But, along the way to solve his Christmas faith crisis, he goes on a heartwarming path of self-discovery as well.
3. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Christmas and Halloween all together in one spectacular film? Yes, please! In one of our movies to watch this Christmas 2018, there’s double the trouble with two holidays in one. And just when you think scary, spooky, cheery, and merry don’t go together, here comes the Nightmare Before Christmas.
Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King and the leader of the Halloween Town, accidentally discovers Christmas Town and his awe for it. And he takes it upon himself to turn Halloween to Christmas. But, he finds that mixing one thing with the other isn’t really as simple as it looks.
4. Home Alone (1,2, and 3)
If you haven’t watched even one of these yet, you definitely need to add it to your watchlist now! Any of the three Home Alone movies can leave any household roaring of laughter. It won’t even matter how unrealistic the events are because it’s just plain funny and delightful.
8-year-old Kevin McCallister is accidentally left at home by his whole family for Christmas vacation. And the kid is crazy happy about it. He gets to enjoy the holidays on his own up until the “Wet Bandits,” a pair of burglars, come knocking on the house. And that’s where the real fun begins: booby traps, funny banter, and everything else in between. Every movie almost has the same plot but, each one never fails to serve fun, wit, and humor. So, if you do plan to do a marathon on this, make sure to be careful so you don’t spew anything out your nose.
5. The Man Who Invented Christmas
Fantastic, ecstatic, funny, heart-warming, and magical. That’s what the story of Charles Dickens, the Man Who Invented Christmas through his book A Christmas Carol, is. It makes you think about family and of the real Christmas spirit. And, it might just make you a lot cheesier towards your loved ones once it’s over.
The movie is set after the publishing of Oliver Twist when Charles Dickens’ next books flopped. And his publishers were getting impatient. Luckily, inspiration hit Dickens and Mr. Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet To Come came to life. As he writes the story, Dickens’ characters literally come to life in front of him. And as it comes to a close, these same characters force him to confront his own problems and take his own path of redemption akin to Mr. Scrooge.
6. Love Actually
This movie just might fill you up for one day of movie watching because there’s not just one but actually, ten separate stories in this two-hour long movie. And it’s an overflowing marathon of all different kinds of love that it might just make some people puke. But, in its own right, cheesy as it may be, it’s wonderful in the way that it makes you realize all the different kinds of love slash emotions you might’ve felt in all your life. And just in time for the season of giving/ forgiving and receiving. Plus, it’s got a very stellar cast where you might just find your favorite actor/actress.
7. While You Were Sleeping
Old but gold. In another undeniably spectacular performance, Sandra Bullock brings us to tears and joy. It’s just that she’s so good in making us root for someone then, she breaks our hearts. And then, she makes us almost cry tears of joy. And While You Were Sleeping might just be one of the best romcoms of the holiday season out there.
In this film, Sandra Bullock acts as Lucy, the lonely fare token collector who saves the life of the handsome commuter Peter. In a short series of events, she’s mistaken as Peter’s fiance as he falls into a coma and is completely welcomed to his family. She spends the holidays with them. And there, she falls in love with Peter’s brother Jack and vice versa. But, what happens when Peter wakes up?
8. The Grinch
The Grinch might just be one of the best things of 2018 especially that it’s Benedict Cumberbatch’s deep baritone voice that’ll give life to the green, cranky Grinch. Because let’s face it. We’ve all had Grinch moments every now and then. And we all definitely know someone who we’d love to strangle for being too overly Grinchy too often. And this movie is just the perfect thing to soften up those cranky hearts out there.
Bitter and lonely, the Grinch plans to ruin Christmas for the people of Whoville by stealing their presents and decorations. So, he dresses up as Santa to get his plan into motion. But, he falls into one of the kids’ trap to capture Santa. And from there, the Grinch’s sour heart starts to melt. And the Christmas joy starts to seep into his heart. But, of course. What’s the Grinch without the mischief?
9. Four Christmases
Some family holiday meetings are just simply bound for disasters. But, just imagine having to divide your time with your family. There’s dread, there’s irritation, but, with the right personalities, there’s bound to be something great. So, you can just imagine Hollywood taking it into their hands to make something absolutely funny, absolutely sweet, and absolutely full of holiday cheer.
Brad and Kate spend the holidays trying to avoid their dysfunctional families. They don’t even want to get married and have kids because of them. Sadly, one Christmas, their overseas vacation plan is thwarted. And they’re forced to divide Christmas day between their divorced parents thus having four Christmases in one day. They brace themselves for the worst but, the trip unexpectedly turns into something that draws the couple closer for better or for worse.
10. Edward Scissorhands
This is another oldie but goodie in our list of movies to watch this Christmas 2018. And it’s another one of Tim Burton’s amazing works. An artificial man with scissors for hands tries to find acceptance and love, now, isn’t that quite a tale for the holidays?
After discovering Edward Scissorhands alone and harmless in an old mansion, Peg Boggs takes him home with her for the holidays. He gets acquainted with Peg’s husband, son, teenage daughter Kim, and the rest of the neighborhood. And it’s all good up until Kim’s boyfriend becomes jealous of Edward. Then it all goes downhill. Edward relentlessly tries to fight for acceptance against all the odds.
