Nintendo Switch

The Console Wars have not been very exciting since Nintendo blundered with the WiiU. Back in 2001, the entire gaming community was split between the PlayStation 2, the Xbox, and the GameCube. You’d find these brutal debates about which one had the best graphics, sound, titles, add-ons… the list goes on and on. But frankly, for the past few years, it’s been pretty much Microsoft vs Sony, with little competition from Nintendo. Now that the Nintendo Switch has been announced however, it looks like the Wars are going in full swing once more.

The PS4 has been the Console Wars leader since its release, and why shouldn’t it be? Sony has already earned the trust of its consumers since the first PlayStation came out in 1994. The PS4 Pro is in essence, just an enhanced version of the PS4. It sports 4096×2160 resolution, a custom-built 8-core processor based on the AMD Jaguar, 8GB of working memory, and 1TB of storage space. The system clocks in at a whopping 2.1GHz, in comparison to the PS4 and PS4Slim’s 1.6GHz.

In essence, the PS4 Pro is not an all-new generation of console. It is an upgrade while we wait for the next generation to come out. And it’s a very, very powerful upgrade at that. Sony has also announced HDR (High Dynamic Range) support for the PS4 Pro. HDR means better, more vibrant colours and shading. But this isn’t a big surprise, as the PS4 has already received the same treatment.

Sony has suggested its price mark to be around $399.00

Console #2: Xbox One Scorpio Specs

The Xbox is largely considered inferior to the PS4, not because of its technical specs, but because of the plethora of controversies that hounded it. There was the Digital Rights Management issue, the privacy and unauthorized surveillance issue, and many more. And yet, the Xbox one was technically a more powerful and more capable machine than the PS4 at 1.75 GHz. The Xbox One S interestingly clocks in at the same speed of 1.75 GHz, but also receives the HDR support that the base Xbox One will not be enjoying.

The Scorpio’s CPU performance looks like it’ll be relatively as powerful as the Xbox One, and most of the upgrades are going to be in its graphics processing. Its chipset is also based on the AMD Jaguar. It will run at 914 MHz in comparison to the current 911 MHz, and 1404 GFLOPS (Giga-Floating-point Operations Per Second) in comparison to the current 1310 GFLOPS. This essentially means the Scorpio’s GPU can handle more operations than its predecessor.

The Xbox One S will be priced at $399.00 on release.

Remember my article about the Nintendo NX? Well, that project has been revealed to be the Switch. Nintendo is being incredibly secretive with this new product, unfortunately,

and details are scarce. However we do know that the Switch is a revolutionary hybrid console unlike anything we’ve seen.

Nintendo has announced that the Switch will support DS and 3DS games as well as exclusive titles. This means the handheld portion will – bar minimum – have at least 128 MB of RAM and 6 MB of VRAM. This makes it better than the PSP, but nowhere near as powerful as the PSVita at 512 MB RAM and 128 MB VRAM. It’s safe to assume the finished product will perform far above the minimum specs listed above, however.

The manufacturers have mentioned that their next console would not replace the Wii U, and instead be another coexisting option. It’s also safe to assume that the Switch CPU clocks in at somewhere above 1.24 GHz thanks to its Nvidia “Tegra” chipset, and will feature backward compatibility for both handheld and console games.

Nintendo has stated that the price, specs, and availability would be revealed at the same time. However analysts estimate it will cost around $299.00.
