Filipinos love romance. But we also love mystery and intrigue. Some of the most viral or talked about topics tend to be about celebrities and their relationships. Whether these are couples who refuse to put a label on their special friendship, or big movie stars with a rumored baby on the way, we can’t help but want to know the truth behind the rumors. Here are four controversial Pinoy couples we’ve all wondered about some time or another:

1. It’s Complicated: Kim Chiu and Xian Lim

Rumors have long followed the special friendship between Kim Chiu and Xian Lim. Despite their well-known closeness, such as a cheek kiss at the screening of Kim’s Ghost Bride, the pair has refused to define their relationship for years. This leaves many Filipinos wondering if they are exclusively dating or simply exploring a blossoming friendship. Kim’s reunion with PBB-costar Gerald Anderson for Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin also launched another series of rumors that Kim and Xian had called it quits because of Xian’s jealousy according to ABS-CBN. Of course, the pair quickly put those rumors to rest and confirmed their relationship remains strong and special.

To the disappointment of curious pinoys, the Kapamilya stars seem content to leave things to a mystery and just enjoy time together. Their recent trips to Denmark and Finland in December saw the pair dogsledding and watching the Aurora Borealis. And despite hints that their relationship might level up, we continue to stay in suspense if they’re dating or not.

2. Slip Of The Tongue: Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson

Next on the list. Unlike our previous rumored pair, Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson confirmed their relationship – but completely by mistake! The couple actually shortly dated in 2010 before breaking up. But rumors soon started circulating in 2017 that they had gotten back together after filming for Star Cinema’s How to Be Yours. They managed to dodge the rumors for a while. But then ABS-CBN caught a slip of the tongue by Gerald in an interview at the Star Magic Ball. In the video, he accidentally reveals that they’ve gotten back together!

“I think it’s obvious na we’re very special [to one another] kasi we’ve been together for the last,” Gerald says before looking at Bea in panic. Flustered, he ends the interview quickly, saying “Basta nage-enjoy kami, tama na!” before leaving with Bea. Ever since then, the couple has been trying to stay on the down-low. But as Gerald said in another interview with ABS-CBN, “What you see is what you get.” Count this couple as confirmed!

3. An Open Letter: Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards

Now onto an incredibly controversial love team. In Nov. 2017, Maine Mendoza shocked AlDub fans with an open letter posted to her blog clarifying her relationship with Alden Richards. In the letter, she said that she and Alden were just friends and a love team, but not a real couple. The letter went viral and tons of people began bashing on Yaya Dub and AlDub, causing Maine to go on a short hiatus from Eat Bulaga. It got to the point that Alden had to defend Maine against the bashers. And then, to make the situation more charged, PEP reported that Alden revealed he was single in an interview. This made certain fans worried that AlDub would be split up.

Alden responded to the rumors and said he and Maine were still on good terms. Still, even though the loveteam clearly seem to be looking for space, rumors still surround them. The rumor mill churned again when Maine returned to the screen in time to celebrate Alden’s birthday, when Maine accidentally unfollowed Alden on Instagram, and when Alden confirmed he and Maine will star in a new movie together in 2018. It seems that even if they are not a real couple, this loveteam will keep making the news.

4. Rumor Has It: Ellen Adarna and John Lloyd Cruz

Now this couple has been dominating the news for a while with rumors of an engagement and a pregnancy. Sweet pictures of the pair had been circulating for a while of them cuddled up or on vacation together. Then a PEP report in Nov. 2017 revealed that Ellen Adarna had told close friends that she and John Lloyd Cruz were expecting a baby together. Despite suspicions of a relationship between the two, the news came as a huge surprise and created tons of controversy. And then soon after that, more rumors spread of an engagement. Fans spotted Ellen sporting a ring in her IG stories – a ring that cost 3 million pesos!

The pair has been notoriously quiet, refusing to confirm their relationship. But at this point, most people can agree that Ellen and John Lloyd are very seriously committed to each other.
