Department of Tourism, viral ad, Sights, Experience the Philippines

The Department of Tourism announced that it is cancelling its contract with McCann World Group, the advertising agency behind the controversial Sights tourism ad. The ad which was released on June 12 drew flak for reportedly copying a 2014 South African ad.

DOT posted on Facebook their official statement about the issue as seen below. It states that the department made the decision after consulting with their stakeholders and getting feedback about the ad. Earlier this week, the department backed up the ad agency after it took full responsibility for the ad.

DOT To Mc Cann: Issue An Apology

The tourism department also wants Mc Cann to issue an apology for the fiasco because it has tarnished the image and reputation of the department. According to Assistant Secretary Ricky Alegre, if the allegations of plagiarism are proven, legal action may be taken against the agency.

Mc Cann World Group was under a P650 million contract with the department to develop 4 ads, as well as audio-visual presentations, radio commercials and print advertisements. Sights is its 2nd ad of its Experience the Philippines series. Anak was its first ad in the series, released early this year.

Mc Cann Speaks Up About DOT Decision

The agency issued a statement about the DOT decision. Saying that while it regrets the decision made by the department, it still hopes that all parties can “discuss a sensible resolution to this matter.”

Mc Cann also said that they have yet to receive official communication about the cancellation. They only heard about it through news reports of the press conference conducted by DOT.

This leaves the department with any advertising agency partner for their future ad campaigns. Bidding will be opened for other companies who want to take on this role in the coming months.

Mc Cann worked on the new ad campaign, centered on the new tagline Experience the Philippines, and has released one TV ad, Anak. The department has opted to revert back to its old slogan, It’s More Fun in the Philippines for future promotional materials.
