Emmy Awards 2016: Netflix Makes Waves With #SheRules Ad

Netflix showcasing diversity on TV

At the recently concluded Emmy Awards 2016, a slew of first-time winners surprised the audience, showcasing what looked like a more diverse set of winners in terms of actors and actresses as well as the shows themselves. A CNN report cited that commentators praised this year’s awards as successfully “showcasing diversity on TV.” So when Netflix played its ad “She Rules” in a spot during the show, it hit the right notes and garnered positive feedback from viewers.

The one-minute ad features some of the female leads in the network’s favorite shows such as Queen Elizabeth in “The Crown,” the “Orange is the New Black” ladies, and Kimmy in the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” Eleven in “Stranger Things,” Jessica in “AKA Jessica Jones,” and a few more. Artist Nina Simone and a woman chef are also part of the line up. As different scenes from Netflix show are flashed on screen, the voice over runs down the characteristics of these women: “We are the optimistic, the fearless, brave, strong, and relentless. Long may we reign.”

On Twitter, the ad was retweeted hundreds of times and generated positive feedback from known Twitter users like @HelloGiggles.com who said that it “has us feeling FEELINGS,” while feminist @FemmePeruana said that Netflix was “toppling the partriarchy.” Another user The Vampire Diaries Executive Producer @julieplec, lauded it for its “good message.”

She Rules ad and Netflix on Diverse and Eclectic Tastes

The ad’s release is timely also because quite a number of Hollywood stars have publicly announced their stance on diversity in the industry, pushing for closing the gender pay gap and casting more LGBT actors and actresses in roles. Netflix has always been vocal about how it wants its programming, especially its original programs, to consider the “diverse and eclectic tastes” of its very global audience, as reported in CNN.
