BTS better watch out. Vietnamese pop singer Son Tung has just taken their spot as the Asian artist with the most YouTube views in 24 hours. Son Tung’s newest song “Run Now” hit the one million mark less than twenty minutes after its release. On the 24 hour mark, it garnered 22 million views taking the record far from BTS. The previous record was at 20.9 million views for BTS’ DNA. Son Tung composed “Run Now” himself which is a mix of hip-hop and RDM. 

The Rise of Son Tung

In the past, Son Tung has faced quite a few plagiarism controversies. According to HelloKpop, he was heavily criticized in 2015 for his song “Maybe Someone Will Come Back.” K-pop fans discovered his beat was very similar to that of Jung Yong Hwa’s “Because I Miss You.” Son Tung settled the issue by changing the beat after the intervention of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Department of Performing Arts and Copyright Office of Vietnam. This is also the reason why he is frequently compared to BTS nowadays. 

However, since his debut in 2012, Son Tung’s fame has been steadily increasing both in the local and foreign scene. The next year he released “Em Của Ngày Hôm Qua” which went on to win awards such as the Zing Music Awards R&B Song of the Year and the We Choice Awards Song of the Year. In 2017, Son Tung held his first ever fan meeting in Seoul, South Korea. In addition to that, he also became the first Vietnamese artist to hit one million subscribers on Youtube. And before “Run Now,” his music video for “Lac Troi” or “Afloat” quickly raked five million views in one day. Now, two days after it’s release, “Run Now” has already garnered 28 million views.
