Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Procrastination, the enemy of productivity that admittedly wins over everyone every now and then. It’s also known as the manyana habit, which has existed in the Philippines culture since our colonial days with the Spaniards when plans were put off until tomorrow or in the near future. It wins everytime we snooze that alarm, prioritize other agendas over more important things, or simply when we’re “not in the mood.” But as of September 6 of which was declared to be Fight Procrastination Day, it is time that we rise to the occasion and get our lives in tip-top shape. Here are some helpful tips to help fight procrastination: 1. Get a good night’s sleep Fighting procrastination doesn’t start tomorrow. It starts today! So, thinking ahead is required to beat the bad habit and a good start to improving thinking begins with a good night’s sleep. In an article in Psychology Today, studies show that sleep directly affects the way we think. In order to straighten out and focus the next day, a good night’s rest is your ally. Get organized What often causes frustration that leads to procrastination is the stress of having so many things on your plate and not knowing which to do first. Carefully assess your agendas before attacking them. Consider their importance, how soon they need to be done, and how much time you need to complete these tasks. It is not to say that you should do everything in one go. Properly pace yourself in everything you do and do take breaks, but be careful to not fall off the wagon. Whether it’s chores, work, or simply getting up on a rainy morning, it’s challenging to put on a smile when the mood just isn’t there. In order to beat that feeling, it helps to think ahead and be excited about the outcome after you’ve accomplished the task. Set a reward for yourself after finishing something. It could be something as simple as eating your favorite snack, giving yourself time to do a favorite hobby, or hang out with your favorite people. It will feel a lot sweeter to do the things you enjoy after crossing out the things you don’t. It’s not wrong to treat yourself once in a while. Photo by Jakob Owens on Unsplash 4. Get Real and Commit Nobody likes someone who can’t commit to anything, right? Commitment is essential, especially to one’s self. Setting plans or making promises without following through with them won’t do you any favors. Commitment is never easy, but it grows stronger the longer you choose to do what is best for you and keep focus. When it comes to fighting procrastination, it’s best to think long term. So start now!
