The Flash Season 3 Episode 4 Recap: Captain Cold is back!?

Flash and Jesse Quick Tag Team

Hello, everyone, it’s good to be back. A lot of technical issues since my last recap (Episode 3) last week, but I won’t pretend you guys care about that. Anyhow, SPOILER ALERT as we discuss The Flash Season 3, Episode 4: The New Rogues

Captain Cold makes a special appearance for The Flash S03E04

Well we can’t really discuss an episode titled “The New Rogues” without bringing up the original Rogues’ Gallery, can we? The episode sets up Sam Scudder (Grey Damon) as the villain. Scudder – also known as Mirror Master – manipulates reflective surfaces, turning them into portals which he can freely traverse. The plot introduces as a metahuman who vanished into a mirror when the STAR Labs particle accelerator explosion hit him with a wave of dark matter.  Scudder was in the middle of a brawl with Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller) aka Captain Cold when he vanished, so Scudder initially appears hell-bent on revenge, unaware that Leonard Snart is gone.

The Flash Season 3 Episode 4: Awkward Love Teams

This is typical of CW humor to place charcters in awkward situations. I personally don’t fancy this kind of humor, but to each their own.

Anyway, we find a little bit of a lover’s quibble between Iris (Candace Patton) and Barry (Grant Gustin), when their romantic movie night is interrupted by Joe arriving home. Barry, who was in the middle of making out with Iris, panics and uses his speed to change the living room’s atmosphere into a more casual beer-n’-chips vibe. Iris feels offended by this and asks Barry to talk to Joe about it. Well just from that, we can imagine the awkwardness of the eventual conversation.

Meanwhile, Jesse Wells (Violett Beane) has completed much of her training, and decides to take Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale)West on a run through the city. Wally probably feels envious of her powers still, but he seems a lot more accepting. Again however, things get fairly awkward when Jesse kisses Wally, and he turns her down, worried of the fact she’s from another earth, and that it would be a risky relationship.

I Hope You’re Doing “Wells” Today

So Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) is aware that he can’t stick around Earth-1 forever, yet he can’t bring himself to shirk off his duties as part of the team. So, with the help of Cisco (Carlos Valdez) and Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker), he sends out an encrypted message – an “elaborate job application,” as Wells puts it – into the multiverse with the intent of luring out potential Harrison Wells… Harrisons… Harrison Wells… es? To help the team when he’s gone. Honestly, this is a brilliant side story for the episode. We get to see Tom Cavanagh going through three different portrayals of the same character in such a short time: a cowboy, an eccentric European, and a mime. Cisco and Caitlin consider the comical fourth Harrison Wells who received the message, but Harrison himself turns him down.

The Flash Season 3 Episode 4: Tag Team Fights

This is pretty cool, having Jesse Quick and The Flash fight side by side against the Mirror Master and the Top (Ashley Rickards). The sequence of events that led to this all began when Mirror Master broke Top out from prison right in front of Joe West’s (Jesse L. Martin) eyes. They begin a crime spree, taking advantage of the fact that Captain Cold is no longer running the streets. Flash and Quick arrive at the scene of one of their burglaries to stop them, but Top manages to disable Jesse, and a distracted Flash gets thrown into a wormhole Mirror Master created, effectively trapping him.

More Killer Frost Previews, And Flash vs New Rogues Round 2

Team Flash tries to get Barry out of the mirror world by freezing the glass to absolute zero, but they are unable to maintain its zero-state long enough for Barry to phase through the barrier. When the team wasn’t looking however, Caitlin taps into her ice abilities, freezing the mirror solid and allowing Barry to get through, much to the surprise of everyone else.

This leads to round two of the Flash and Jesse against the New Rogues. This time, the heroes are prepared. With a little technological advantage, the heroes lure out Mirror Master with a hologram of Captain Cold. Jesse is then able to take Top down, and Flash traps Mirror Master with a circle of full-body mirrors, taking advantage of the infinity mirror effect. Any time Mirror Master attempts to enter one mirror, he simply reappears in the mirror directly opposite to him.

Episode of Goodbyes: Barry moves out and… goodbye to Earth Two Wells?

The episode ends with another round of goodbyes between the Earth-1 and Earth-2 cast, and with the introduction of a new and upbeat Harrison Wells – who calls himself “HR.” Cisco helps Harrison get over his feelings of getting “replaced” by reassuring him there’s only one real Harrison Wells for them. Harrison whispers to Cisco that someone else got The Flash out of the mirror trap just before he and his daughter leave for Earth-2.

Meanwhile, Barry has made the decision to solve the awkwardness of living with his foster father and dating his foster father’s daughter by raising the idea of moving out. Joe appears excited for the idea, stating he thought Barry would never leave.

And that wraps that up. Pretty good episode, if I may say so myself. It’s nice to take a break from the main Dr. Alchemy story arc with these kinds of episodes.

Side note: now before I go, again guys, thanks for putting up with my absence. I’ll try to come up with some kind of humorous take on what happened in the next few days. No, it ain’t gonna be a rant, but it’s definitely about the double typhoons that just hit. ‘til then, I’ll see you guys next time on Popcorn Time.

The Flash Season 3 airs on Jack TV every Wednesday at 15:00 (+8:00 GMT)
