The rise of the digital age comes with the need for everything quicker. From food and parcel delivery, everything is convenient with eCommerce. What may seem like a minor detail can actually make or break a customer’s experience when they unbox their order! Due to this, companies have already changed the game for packaging necessities. With the increase in demand comes the question of how packaging should be addressed.

Let’s take a closer look at how eCommerce is transforming the packaging industry and its associated needs.

The Fast Industry of eCommerce

The issue is the speed at which we consume plastic. Plastic waste was already present in the industry before the pandemic, but the number increased through eCommerce as we throw away numerous bubble wraps from our parcels. While eco-friendly packaging already exists, researchers have invented smart packaging, which revolutionizes the packaging game.

Differences between Smart and Green Packaging

Smart Packaging

Smart packaging is an eco-friendly packaging that uses technology that enhances a container. It extends shelf life and equipped with color-changing technology that shows if the food inside is fresh or stale.

Smart packaging can also get real-time feedback from clients by allowing couriers to track the location in real-time. It even interacts with customers by just tapping the phone to the side or by scanning a QR code. This allows both buyer and seller to fully maximize the packaging beyond just being a container of one’s goods.

Green Packaging

Green packaging is created from recycled materials which are biodegradable. It is often made of brown paper-like material and ranges from take-out bags to biodegradable shoe boxes.

Greenpak, EcoNest, and San Miguel Corporation are among the leading businesses in local green packaging. As eCommerce has thrived in recent years, we still have to catch up to lessen our environmental waste. Popular online shopping options for Filipinos, such as Shopee and Lazada, are yet to change to sustainable methods. In that regard, our approach to traditional packaging should advance together with technology.

Wrapping It Up

Smart packaging is still in early development, even though it has been around for years. Even though green packaging is common with cosmetics and fast foods, some online shopping applications have yet to follow.

In the question of sustainability, we still have a long way to go towards a greener future. But think positive, as we already have the means in our hands as long as we support green packaging companies locally.
