It’s that time of the year when you get to wear that skin-tight bikini and flaunt that beach bod you’ve been working so hard for. But first, how’s that skin? We are so caught up in going on a diet to get that perfect shape but we fail to look at the most important part that we flaunt for everyone to see: our skin. Taking care of our skin is a must especially during the summer. Oily and dry skin are two of the most common skin problems among men and women. According to bioclarity.com, oily skin is known medically as seborrhea and is caused by excess skin oil produced within the pores. Increased androgens during puberty and other life events are one of the top causes of oily skin. Androgens are hormones present in both males and females that signal the maturation of the skin’s sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are located in the skin and are responsible for secreting an oily substance called sebum. And when overactive sebaceous glands produce excess sebum, your skin can look shiny and your pores can become clogged. Dry skin, on the other hand, is an uncomfortable skin condition that occurs at all ages. It can be caused by environmental factors such as weather, hot baths and showers, and the use of harsh soaps and detergents. 10 Ways to manage dry and oily skin 1.Wash your face Washing your face should be part of your beauty routine especially when you have oily skin. Wash your face twice a day and make it a habit. 2.Use the right skin care products Stay hydrated and moisturized all the time. Use the right soap and moisturizer for your skin type. If you have dry skin, avoid using harsh soap. The University of Iowa Department of Dermatology says that Dove, Neutrogena Dry Skin Formula, and Aveeno Cleansing Bar are recommended for those with dry skin. Oil of Olay Sensitive Skin Soap, on the other hand, is mild and best for people with extremely dry skin. Cetaphil cleanser is also a gentle non-soap option for cleansing extremely dry skin. It is important to check the labels and be sure that the soap products include lactic acid which prevents excess oils. 3.Be gentle with your skin. Do not scrub your face This is one of the common mistakes that some people with oily skin do. They scrub their face rigorously in an attempt to unclog pores. But this practice should be avoided because it only creates tiny lacerations in the skin leading to skin inflammation as well. 4. Learn the Benefits of using Honey Honey can be used in a number of different ways and througout time has been a tried and tested beauty regimen. When you use it as a cleanser it will help pores open up washing away a layer of dirt on your skin. When used as a moisturizer, it not only prevents oil build up but it also brightens your skin. Use oil-free cosmetics Even though you want to look presentable in your travel getaways this summer, make sure to use makeup that are oil-free or “non-comedogenic” that will not clog your skin’s pores. Do not overdo powder as well. Many people with oily skin think that powder can help avoid oily skin but the truth is it can get cakey especially when the weather is hot. This contributes to oily skin. Photo by Jamie Street (Unsplash) 6. Never underestimate the importance of sun block Although we know that we cannot run away from the sun’s heat during summer, it is still important to protect our skin from the harsh UV rays no matter what skin type. Look for zinc oxide formulas, an ingredient for natural sun protection. It offers broad-spectrum protection that acts as a shield from both UVB rays, which cause sunburn, and UVA rays, which penetrate more deeply and may be more dangerous. 7.Use a Face Mask for extreme hydration Using a face mask is very important in protecting our skin as well as in making it soft and bright. There are a variety of face masks like the clay mask and egg white mask, which are two of the best masks for our skin. Photo via herbivorebotanicals Instagram Account 8. Your dermatologist is your friend Before using any soap, moisturizer, or toner, you should never forget to consult your doctor or dermatologist first. They know what the best for your skin type. This also helps you avoid using wrong products. 9.Bring Blotting Sheets everywhere you go Never forget to bring blotting sheets with you during summer activities. It can be your best friend when it comes to combat oily skin. 10.Nothing beats a healthy lifestyle Your lifestyle also affects your skin so you should get enough sleep and most of all, get away from stress. The lack of sleep can result in insulin resistance which can increase the creation of IGF-1, a hormone that stimulates the production of sebum. Sebum is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands and too much sebum can lead to an overly oily complexion.
