Jack Davis, NASA, 9-year-old boy, Planetary Protection Officer, Guardians of the Galaxy

Jack Davis, a 9-year-old boy from New Jersey wrote to the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) to apply for the position of Planetary Protection Officer. In his letter, he cites what he thinks are his most important qualifications: that his sister thinks he is an alien and that he is young and can “learn to think like an alien.”

NASA shared a copy of Jack’s handwritten letter on their website. They also shared the response written by the agency’s Planetary Science division director. Look at the snapshot of both letters below via NASA Space Launch System Twitter account.

Another report in the Philippine Star said that a family friend shared a photo of the letter on Reddit after which it went viral. In his letter, Jack first indicates his intent to apply for the position.

He then proceeds to explain why he thinks he is suited for the job. First, he says that his sister vouches for him because she thinks he is an alien. Second, he has watched all the movies about space and aliens, including Guardians of the Galaxy. He also says that he is good at video games and hopes to watch Men in Black soon.

Towards the end of his letter, he says “I am young, so I can learn to think like an alien.” He signs his letter with the title Guardian of the Galaxy.

NASA Writes Back: “We Hope To See You Here One Of These Days”

NASA, on the other hand, caught Jack’s letter and wrote him a response. Dr. James Green praises the young boy for wanting to be part of the agency. He then explains what the role of Planetary Protection Officer is, which is far from what Jack imagines it to be. According to him, the work involves making sure that no contaminants enter the Earth or leave the Earth during space missions.

Aside from the letter, Jack also got a surprise phone call from the agency’s Planetary Research Director. This time, NASA congratulated him for being interested in the position. After the exchange was shared on Twitter, netizens also praised NASA for a job well done – inspiring young children to reach for their dreams.
