We can say it’s a love-hate relationship. Kris Aquino is Philippines’ “Queen of all Media.” Throughout the years, she has established her place on the screen. Although she’s an Aquino, she veered away from politics and went to what she does best. Because the internet is a new medium to try on, she’s transitioning to the world of online marketing.
Through YouTube, she’s reaped the same fruits she got from appearing on TV. This includes endorsements, deals, and even a makeup line under her name. She has MAC, Lazada, Adobo Mall, Procter and Gamble, Ever Bilena, and a role in Kevin Kwan’s bestseller “Crazy Rich Asians.” This goes to show that there’s no stopping the charm this queen has.
Kris Aquino: A YouTuber
Vlogging is not a new thing. It has been a trend since YouTube started in 2005. It is the act of recording what you do with a video camera. It’s like blogging, but better. In fact, it has been around for so long that Aquino is late to the trend. But what worked to her favor is the audience that she has. Yes, she might be a tactless personality. People hate her for being who she is; the usual Kris Aquino who’s maarte. But that’s what sells. The more hate she gets, the more views her account reaps.
Her YouTube account, “The Aquinos,” currently has 162,000 subscribers. That is low since the top Philippine YouTube accounts are at a million subscribers. That includes Cancer-survivor Will Dasovich and Vlogger Cong TV. But get this. Her views peak at a whopping 15,000,000 views. That’s for her 3-video house tour alone. What does this imply? It says that what she does on her videos make people, even those who don’t follow her, want to watch her content.
Kris Aquino: Queen of All Meme-dia
To put it, memes are social media’s communication medium. These are pictures with subtitles that could pass as jokes or response online. In her videos, Aquino provides subtitles for her audience. In some instances, these subtitles could pass as funny jokes. Even without the context provided in the video. Netizens would use screencaps of her videos as memes. This makes her videos go viral. People search her videos and look for the meme posted either on Twitter or Facebook.
As she always tells in her interviews, “Spoofing is the highest form of flattery.” For her, she takes memes as compliments to her identity as an artist. In fact, she thanks the netizens for the times they made fun of her. Through that, she has cemented her place in the online world.
Kris Aquino: Sealing the Deals
Before her online stint, she has always been a top choice for endorsing products. Be it local or international, she is the one to choose. Her honesty makes her sell the product. She exudes credibility when it comes to product reviews. She’s known for trying out the product first before signing contracts. She assures the quality of the endorsement deals she’s having deals with.
She is still under Procter & Gamble. In an interview, she claims that she auditioned for the international brand P&G. This was even if her career was at its peak. She recalls asking Boy Abunda if auditioning for Pantene was worth is. She did it. Her mom, Cory Aquino, was a Pantene-user ever since. She wanted to make her proud.
In recent news, Ever Bilena contacted her to be the ambassador of the Pinoy-made makeup line. Yes, it might be impossible for her to use the product but she does. She claims that their lipsticks glide well that’s why she’s impressed with it. Notorious for using both high-end and more affordable products, she knew that signing the deal under Ever Bilena was a right choice. This month, the company will release the makeup line under her name. It will be a kit for the Pinays like her that like makeup but are on a tight budget.
Adobo Mall and Lazada also showed interest with Aquino. The two e-commerce websites have her as an endorser. Since she now works in the online world, it’s easier to convince people to shop online. Added to that, she is also a fan of online shopping since it’s more hassle-free for her and her busy schedule.
Along with Ever Bilena, Aquino also has connections in the famous makeup company, MAC. During the launch of Patrick Starrr’s makeup line under MAC in the Philippines, Aquino is one of the few who got to interview Patrick Starrr in a MAC store. She is one of the Philippine celebrities known to be a MAC-user ever since. This also includes Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
Meanwhile, Aquino is also in the works with author Kevin Kwan. They are shooting the movie for Kwan’s bestseller “Crazy Rich Asians.” Click here to watch Patrick Starr and Miss Universe 2015 makeup tutorial.
The Queen Gives Back
With her continued success, Aquino never forgets to give back. In her channel, she features Filipino businesses from time to time. Last Valentine’s day, she featured shops where her viewers can get balloons and flowers to gift. Right now, she has an ongoing series where she reviews clothing shops that she loves. She gives her insights and suggestions to the clothes she likes. She’s shown Unif0rm, Olivia and Fifth, and Cole Vintage.
Kris Aquino is still the Queen of All Media. But she now carries another crown: The First Queen Of Online Media. She has used her fame and popularity to breed a business of her own. With her account’s continued growth, her name will soon be immortalized. She is more than her surname. She has made a name of her own.
