Filipino designer Monique Lhuillier continues to make her mark in Hollywood, with her most recent project for “Fifty Shades Darker.” The US-based designer created the elegant silver dress that Dakota Johnson (Ana Steele) wore in one major scene in the movie.

‘Confidence And Femininity’

Johnson’s character, the young Anastasia Steele appears in the movie attending a grand masquerade ball with Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan. Since it is an event organized by Christian’s parents, she needs to make her mark. And what better way do that than making a grand entrance in a stunning and flowing silver sheath, accented with an ostrich-feather capelet.

Speaking about this project, she said that she was delighted to work with Universal Pictures to “design for the character of Anastasia Steele.” She added, “Like the Monique Lhuillier woman, Ana radiates confidence and femininity, and so the gown I imagined for this iconic scene encapsulates that modern sophistication.”

Costume Designer Shares Inspiration For The Dress

The film’s costume designer Shay Cunliff also shared how Lhuillier and her design team worked with them to come with this creation. In the report, she mentioned that there was continuous exchange of ideas and images of “old Hollywood.” “She and her team took inspiration from there – crafting this stunning confection.

Ana’s cape itself was a challenge—each feather was sewn by hand—but I felt it would magnify Ana’s show-stopping entrance at the ball, harking back to the 1930’s screen sirens. Monique also beautifully resolved our need to create a gown which can effortlessly slip to the ground…another feat of engineering,” the costume designer added.

‘Fifty Shades Darker’ – Another Blockbuster Hit

The film opened in Philippine theaters on Feb. 8 and according to a Philippine Star report, it earned PhP 18 million on its opening day. This is way past the PhP 15 million earnings of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the first film in the trilogy.

The last film of the trilogy, “Fifty Shades Freed” will be shown next year, also in time for Valentine’s Day 2017.
