The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) issued a new memo that affects fare discounts for students, the elderly, and disabled persons. Soon enough, the twenty percent discount will not only be enjoyed during weekdays but during weekends, summer breaks, and holidays as well. The said memo is set to take effect on Saturday, Oct 28.

In April, a Senate Bill was sought to expand fare discounts for students not only during weekdays but during vacations, weekend, and holidays. This was introduced by Sen. Juan Edgardo Sonny Angara. This can be granted for as long as a proper ID or enrollment form can be presented. A report by the Inquirer quoted Sen. Angara who said that “this would enable and encourage students to do research and group studies even during weekends and school breaks.”

LTFRB posted a copy of the memorandum via Twitter on Tuesday, Oct 23. It states the “Board on the 9th of May 2005 promulgated Memorandum No. 2005-014 (Re: Supplement to Memorandum Circular 2003-033); which is the Grant of Fare discount to elderly, disabled person and students), pursuant to its powers vested by E.O 202,”

The EO says students can avail of the twenty percent (20%) discount from Monday to Sunday including summer breaks, legal and special legal holidays. Post-graduate students (those taking up medicine, law, masteral, doctoral degree and the like) cannot avail of the said fare discount.”

According to the memo, it is said to take effect 15 days following the publication of the memo in a newspaper of general circulation and after filing three copies with the UP Law Center.

Details on the memo seen below show that the memo has been received by the UP Law Center on Oct 12. Therefore, the effectivity of the said memo takes place on Saturday, Oct 28.

The memo was signed by LTFRB Chairman, Atty. Martin B. Delgra III, two other board members and was attested by the Executive Director, Atty. Augustin M. Vestil Jr.
