MMK Mica Becerro: Music as a Storyteller

Mica’s family is what anyone may describe as ideal. They were all active in serving at their local parish. She would sing every Sunday and was trained to do so by her father, Ramil. He was her inspiration while growing up. Her mother, Loida, on the other hand, was always supportive when it comes to Ramil and their daughters, Mica and MaiMai. When Ramil unfortunately lost his job, he saw it as a sign to finally fulfill his desire to become a deacon and study in the seminary. At first Loida was worried because of the many needs they have, but being the loving wife she is, she finally gave her blessing. While Ramil was away, Mica promised to keep singing.

Ramil’s alleged affair overturns Mica’s family. After Ramil finished his studies, he began his duties as a deacon. One Sunday, while he was speaking, a handful of people began murmuring, saying that they cannot stand listening to him. They said he had no right to stand in front. Loida heard this and she began to question. Soon enough, they were called before the head of the parish and were told that a letter of complaint was submitted. The letter stated that Ramil had a relationship with another woman. Although he didn’t admit this, he was stripped off of his being a deacon. This also marked the family’s most difficult times.

Mica’s passion was hanging on a thread. Because Mica was so frustrated with what was happening with her family, her love for singing dwindled. She couldn’t find the heart to sing because she had anger towards her father. Another reason is because people around her would judge her because of what happened. At this time, it was her grandmother who encouraged her. She told Mica that she should sing even more until famous. This is the best way to prove everyone wrong. So Mica did just that, she kept on singing.

The family experiences loss and illness. Ramil changed drastically after he was removed as a deacon. He became overprotective, skeptic and angry. There were heated arguments at most times like when Loida arrived home later than usual, and when Mica’s sister arrived home with a classmate of hers. The family no longer felt that sense of home. What’s worse is that members of the family would leave.  Mica’s elder sister moved out to pursue her studies. Then soon, Mica’s grandmother and grandfather passed away. She was left at home with her parents, which was something she was not completely happy about. Because she was bitter towards her father, she wouldn’t show the slightest respect. One time, he was raging with anger, shouting at Mica, saying that no one ever respects him in his house. While he was saying this, his speech started slurring. He was already having a stroke. Things got darker for Mica and her family.

Mica turns to music and comes to love the Opera. Mica’s father was a difficult patient to take care of. She sees her mother having such a hard time. Whenever this happens, she turns to singing. It was her way of coping. In one contest, however, she noticed a handful of people in the audience making fun of how she looked and once again, because of her father. She sang out of tune at one line and she left discouraged. When she was talking to her mother, she asked if she could take voice classes so she could sing better. Loida agreed to this even if she knew it would be added expense. She wanted to keep supporting her daughter. In time, Mica’s voice coach soon discovered that Mica can sing songs from the Opera. Although Mica had not known much about the Opera then, she learned the songs and started to love singing them. She has found her niche.

Mica’s heart softens towards her father. Of everyone in the household, Mica was the most unforgiving. Both her mother and older sister came to forgive her father. She, on the other hand,  still struggled. It was Mica’s older sister who said that she should not let anger rest in her heart because this would poison her life. Loida also said that she was partly at fault for what had happened with their father. She admitted that although their father made a mistake, his illness is more than enough as a consequence. It s more important now that they have each other. Mica listened but was not accepting this just yet. But then when she saw and felt how affectionate his father began to be towards her, her heart began to soften.

The Voice Teens writes out Mica’s theme song. Mica soon realized that she was fulfilling her grandmother’s dream for her. She auditioned for The Voice Teens and decided to take a risk with “Queen of the Night.” She knew that this was the song that spoke to her heart the most. She got in and was ready for the Blind Auditions. She shared this moment with her family. She learned to forgive and start anew. Her father was so proud of her.

In the Blind Auditions, she got a four-chair turn and chose to join Team Lea. Mica made it to the Grand Finals and surpassed her own expectations. For the first time, she felt accepted for who she is, not being judged anymore. The best thing is that her family has been restored in love and forgiveness. There is nothing quite like that. It beats the success of any career by a landslide. Mica is now embracing all of who she is and who she can be with her music and her family.

Maalaala Mo Kaya’s August 19 episode is entitled, “Piyesa.”
