Share on Facebook Share on Twitter “First love never dies.” The February 4 episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya’s proves this to be true when a teenage friendship grows into a romantic one. In the year 2007, 12-year-old Mart (Zaijian Jaranilla) is infatuated and pursues the sweet 13-year-old Sandra (Belle Mariano). Their story began with the two playing badminton, patintero and biking during summer breaks in Tondo. Soon, these turned into kilig moments, affectionate text messages and having to face the hard reality of trying to keep up with the relationship’s demands. Mart and Sandra struggle to keep communicating and give due attention amidst time and distance. In these instances, something has got to give specially when Mat and Sandra start growing up. They separate and went on with their lives. In the end, however, 20-year-olds Mart and Sandra find each other through social media. They then realize that things may not necessarily have changed. Nostalgia begins. The episode entitled “When Love Grows” is directed by Raz dela Torre and written by Benson Logronio and Arah Jell Badayos. The cast also stars Yayo Aguila, Alexa Macanan, Nathaniel Britt, Raquel Montessa and Ricardo Cepeda. Friends + The Crush Factor Sandra visits her grandmother in Tondo during long school breaks. One summer, Mart saw her for the first time and he was dumbfounded. Like any other teenager with a big crush, this is ordinary. It took him seven months before he was bold enough to speak to her again. When Sandra finally returned, Mart made sure to spend more time with her. They would play the games any Pinoy kid enjoyed like patintero, badminton, biking and tag. The greatest thing about this is even the kids in the neighborhood would join in. It is at this kind of childhood Mart and Sandra grew up in. Naturally, they became good friends. Mart would confide in Sandra about things that saddened his family or whatever bothers him. Sandra, on the other end, always looks at the lighter side of life and so he found it easy open up to her. It is these kinds of moments that make friendships extra special. However, when Sandra starts expecting Mart to make a move, she is frustrated. According to her friends, Mart may not feel the same way he does. Her “bes” Mart may just see her as a friend. Because of this Sandra chooses to have a relationship with another boy her age. Mart, of course, is discouraged. Good thing this didn’t last lost. Sandra broke up her boyfriend and told Mart she was single again. In a whim, Mart made his move. “Tayo na,” Sandra exclaimed. Puppy love, it is. Bes, Sila Na! “Bakit hindi ka nagrereply? Nakakainis ka na!” The puppy love dilemma begins. As a teenager, Mart enjoys playing basketball and computer games. This leaves Sandra feeling alone and ignored. When Mart starts to see just how demanding the whole thing is, he turns cold and says, “Hindi pa ako ready. Break na tayo.” Sandra is brought to tears by this. Even if this was Mart’s decision, Sandra wrote him a letter saying that she loves him still and would wait for him. Sadly, Mart did not read the letter at once. He was only able to see it after a few years. Mart’s mom was right when she said that they are not yet ready to handle a relationship. They are too young and they have their life ahead of them. For Mart and Sandra, First Love Never Dies When Mart turned 20, he feels regret for how he treated Sandra. He did not stop until he found Sandra on the social media and after some time he was successful. He then adds Sandra to his friendlist and their relationship is rekindled. When they finally meet, Mart apologized to Sandra for hurting her. Sandra did not fully accept this at first because of the pain it caused her. But now that Mart is wiser and more mature, he is more than ready to prove his love for her. In time, Mart and Sandra’s puppy love became true love.
