Earthquakes with magnitudes 3.0 and 2.4 shook Baguio City on March 22 at 11:34 a.m. and 11:37 a.m. respectively. The quakes were equivalent to Intensity II classified as “Slightly Felt.” Incidentally, around 58,000 elementary and high school students in the City of Pines simultaneously performed an earthquake drill on the same day the quake hit the City. The exercise was initiated by the Department of Education Baguio Division.

Earthquake in Baguio City, March 22

The Office of the Civil Defense Cordillera posted information on Facebook about the earthquake that hit Baguio City on March 22. The post showed confirmation of the earthquakes that shook Baguio City at 11:34 a.m. and 11:37 a.m. The data showed a magnitude of 3.0 and 2.4 respectively.

The confirmation was from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS). The earthquakes felt earlier on was classified as “Slightly Felt” according to the PHILVOCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS).

“Slighty Felt” is equivalent to Intensity II. This means that it is felt by few individuals at rest indoors. Hanging objects swing slightly while still water in containers oscillates noticeably.

Earthquake Drills in Baguio City on same day of real earthquake

On the same day that these earthquakes hit Baguio City, elementary and high school students were simultaneously performing the “Duck-Cover-Hold” earthquake drills. This exercise was an initiative of the Department of Education Baguio Division.

The earthquake drill performed on March 22 was a prelude to the First Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) set on March 31. Needless to say, it was a perfect time for the exercise.
