Ken doll

On June 20, Mattel has announced the expansion of its Barbie Fashionistas Line that modernized the classic dapper looks of the Ken doll. The stylish line that includes 15 new Ken dolls was released just in time for the Paris Men’s Fashion Week. The one that has stirred a lot of missed emotions via the social media, however, is Ken with a man bun. Mattel said that the new Ken dolls make the Fashionistas Line “makes it the most diverse fashion doll line in the marketplace.”

The Barbie brand finds importance in keeping up with the times and modernizing Ken is most reflective of this principle. Lisa McKnight, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Barbie states that they are “redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation” and how Ken looks like today “allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie’s world.”

The New York Times reports that the changes include three kinds of body types, seven various skin tones, eight hair colors, and nine hairstyles that include cornrows, fade, shaggy dog, quaff and the buzz cut. Ken’s wardrobe is also of the 21st Century fashion sense like the faux hipster plaid, beach bum tanks, and skinny suits.

Manbun Ken of Barbie’s “The New Crew” Fashionista Line Goes Viral in Twitter

Within 24 hours upon the release of the Ken makeover announcement, Twitterverse started buzzing. Manbun Ken went viral. The comments of users are undeniably most interesting and humorous at the same time.

One user tweeted that Manbun Ken is an urban farmer and wants to talk about backyard chickens. Another said that he brings his own avocados in eating establishments. Yet another assumes that Manbun Ken’s accessories include an unkempt beard, neck tattoo decals and gluten-free pita chips with hummus. The comments go on and on and for any marketing scheme, this may be deemed as a success.
