Rufino Borrego, 61 from Lisbon, was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy when he was just 13 years old, the Jornal de Noticias reported  Since then he has spent 43 years of his life on a wheelchair. But in 2010, tables have turned and now he can walk!

Muscular dystophy is a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass, wherein eventually, a person loses the ability to walk.

Rufino had this condition until a neurologist realized in 2010 that he only suffered from myasthenia- which is characterized by the weakness and rapid fatigue of any of the muscles under voluntary control. This disease is said to be curable through asthma medication.

A miracle: Rufino Borrego walks after 43 years

Borrego was able to walk for the first time when he went to his usual cafe, people thought it was a miracle.

Accrding to MSN news, Borrego does not have any ill feelings towards the hospital that misdiagnosed him because he says myasthenia was not a known disease during the 1960s. He went on to say, “I just want to make use of my life.”
