Sesame Street

The ‘Mannequin challenge’ is a viral frozen-in-time video that has taken over social media. It started with a group of high school students just having fun. Recently, celebrities, famous professional sports groups and even politicians are tied to the craze. Paul McCartney, Kevin Hart, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, First Lady Michelle Obama and even Hillary Clinton are among those who have been trending. Anne Curtis, Isabelle Daza, Solenn Heussaff, TV shows like ‘Encantadia’ and ‘It’s Showtime’ are those who have been following the trend in the Philippines.

Mannequin Challenge, Who Started It

According to the First Coast News, the ‘Mannequin Challenge was created by students as Edward H. White High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Jasmine Cavins told First Coast News that she and some of her friends came up with the idea during their Advanced Art Class.

The group narrated that their friend Emili Allen walked up to the front of the class and froze still. Their friend Alaynah then said, “hey you look like a mannequin.” Their other friend Derek Hill said, “We should make this a challenge.” And that’s how the ‘mannequin challenge’ started. Now, the hashtag #mannequinchallenge has been followed by thousands.

The group posted their video thinking it would be good for an upcoming assignment about live movement or structural art.

Mannequin Challenge Song: Rae Sremmurd ‘Black Beatles’

If you notice almost all ‘Mannequin challenge’ videos have one thing in common aside from the fact that they are all standing still. The song you hear over and over is Rae Sremmurd’s ‘Black Beatles’. According to Billboard, ‘Black Beatles’ shoot to No. 1 from No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It has received a big boost because of how many times it has been used for the ‘mannequin challenge’ videos. Rae Sremmurd himself did the challenge live on stage.

Tips On How To Make A ‘Mannequin Challenge’ Video

Well, as creators have said it is pretty easy, all you have to do is stand still. Here are some tips to make your video great and extra creative.

  1. Choose a theme for your video that asks for a lot of action. Don’t just sit or lay down. Go for scenes that require people to either run or walk. You need big movements when you make the video. It makes it more exciting!
  2. Grab a camera that can records quality video. If you’re using a smartphone make sure that you have good pixels. Use a stabilizer or a pod while you are at it. It makes your shots move smoother.
  3. Make sure your facial expressions will do the talking. Since the challenge doesn’t involve speaking, make sure your facial expressions are as expressive as you can make it.
  4. Stay as still as you can. That’s the biggest rule for this challenge.
  5. Go for big groups. Since you need a lot of action, you need a lot of people.
  6. Keep it on a 30 second video only. A lot of action less time, that’s what makes it cool!
  7. Enjoy! Enjoy every bit of it.
