Social Media Reacts to Marcos Burial and US Elections

November 8 seems to be an unforgettable day for social media as netizens refer to it as either a “toxic” day or the greatest day ever. The decision for Marcos’ burial and the US Elections fall under the same day. The public had mixed reactions to events that happened and expressed their thoughts on social media.

US Elections 2016, Clinton Concedes

In the US, partial results have been showing a win for presidential candidate Donald Trump. According to a BBC live count, Trump has won 275 electoral votes and he needed 270 for victory.  He won Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Florida.

LA Times says Hillary Clinton conceded defeat to Donald Trump through a private phone call. Reports say Clinton did not speak publicly. But when Trump addressed his supporters, he said, “She congratulated us,and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign.”

Marcos Burial, SC Ruled Marcos Be Buried At The Libingan Ng Mga Bayani

In the other side of the world, the the Supreme Court ruled former President Ferdinand Marcos be buried at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani. The vote was 9-5. The SC dismissed collective petitions filed by human rights groups and martial law victims. President Duterte said on Wednesday that he stands by his decision despite sectors asking him to do otherwise.

Groups who filed petitions against Marcos’ burial at the Libingan say it violates Republic Act No. 289,  “An Act Providing for the Construction of a National Pantheon for Presidents of the Philippines, National Heroes and Patriots of the Country.” Pro-Marcos supporters argue that Marcos abused  human rights during Martial Law, broke a written agreement between the Philippine government through former President Fidel Ramos, and the Marcos family on Marcos’ remains in Ilocos Norte.

Pro-Marcos supporters on the other hand argue that Marcos was a President, Commander-in-Chief, a retired military veteran and Medal Valor Awardee which qualifies him to be buried at the Libingan.
