Mayon volcano

Mayon Volcano’s eruption, although in its early phase, on Monday night is causing quite a stir on social media. Netizens have been capturing photos and videos of the volcano in Albay as it continues to spew lava and ash until Tuesday morning. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS) shared a video of Mount Mayon emitting thick ash just before 9 am on Tuesday, Jan 16.

On Sunday, PHILVOLCS issued an Alert LEvel 3 on the Mayon Volcano at around 8 pm. This means “hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or days.” Over the weekend, a glowing red light was seen coming from the infamous Mayon Volcan. This indicates that lava is starting to flow. Three steam-driven eruptions already occurred over the weekend which blew ash plumes into the air.  Click here to read the full story.

Mayon Volcano videos on social media

On Monday night, netizens have been sharing videos and photos of the Mayon Volcano showing lava flowing down its slopes. One posted a video by Drew Zuniga. The user said that the lava almost looks like an image of a girl believed to be Magayon, the heroine in the legend of Mt. Mayon. See posts below.

PHILVOLCS, on the other hand, posted a video on Facebook at around 9 am on Tuesday, Jan 16 showing the Mayon volcano acting up emitting ash or in a pyroclastic flow event. This means there is a fast-moving current of hot gas and volcanic matter. See post below.

According to CNN, Albay Governor Al Francis Bichara asked the board to declare a state of calamity due to Mt. Mayon’s volcanic activity. If so, all agencies will be able to respond to emergencies. The report further said that in Legazpi City, five barangays inside the 7-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) to the south of Mayon were already evacuated. Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal also suspended all activities in the EDZ.

The report says state volcanologists say Mayon is still “very early” in its eruptive phase and they are recording rockfall events, dangerous pyroclastic flows and is not ruling out a possible explosive eruption.
