Share on Facebook Share on Twitter The mayor of the Italian village of Bormida has taken back his offer to pay US$ 2,200 or €2,000 to anyone who is willing to move there. Daniele Galliano calls on the public to stop calling or sending requests for information. According to Express.co.uk, his office has been receiving thousands of inquiries after he shared the announcement on Facebook. His announcement was picked up by international media thus generating a lot of interest all over the world. Mayor Says ‘It Was Only An Idea’ Within four days after the post, the report says that the mayor and the local council received 17,000 inquiries. Most people called, while a few even asked for information personally. The mayor was overwhelmed with the response even after the post was deleted. He told Express.co.uk that he was sharing the idea as a suggestion to the region of Liguria. This is the region where Bormida belongs. Unfortunately, national and international media heard of it, leading to it being reported all over the world. He also clarified the terms of the offer, first saying that the low monthly rent will be offered through a municipal housing and it will only be available to those who are already in Italy. The incentive, intended as a contribution to “help with the difficulties of moving,” still needs to be discussed. With the help of the Liguria region, it may happen in 2018. The mayor also dispelled reports that the offer includes a job. In the village website, he acknowledges that “the job crisis, unfortunately, is also here.” Too Good To Be True Earlier reports about the supposed offer said that the idea stemmed from efforts to prevent villages like Bormida from becoming a ghost town. Bormida’s population has dwindled in the past years to its current 394. This situation is the same for many small villages all over the country. Related Story: Want To Live In Italy?
