Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Metrobank and Globe Telecom have recently spoken up about the recent ‘Palit SIM’ scam. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has summoned the said bank and telecommunication company to talk about the phishing scam that has alarmed people. Most people do online banking through their cellphones. Cellphone numbers are part of the information needed to access a bank’s online facility. ‘Palit SIM’ is when the sim card of a user’s mobile phone has been swapped by a third party without their knowledge, of course. This sim card is then used to access bank accounts. Palit sim scam, how to not be a victim A report by Interaksyon narrates how a woman became a victim of the Palit sim scam. The woman lost around P40,000 in her Metrobank account as her Globe SIM was switched and used by a third party to access her bank information. In the report, Globe Telecom says they follow strict rules in replacing SIM cards. It is the responsibility of the user or customer to keep their SIM cards and details private. Metrobank, on the other hand, says that if customers raise concerns about their accounts, they make sure to do a thorough investigation to resolve issues and are in constant communication with clients who have complaints. Meanwhile, Metrobank gives tips to the public on how to not be a victim of phishing scams. First, be wary of emails and sites asking for personal or account information. NEVER fill out any form being requested by these sites. Second, hover your mouse/cursor on the link. If it looks suspicious, do not click the link. Third, always make sure that your antivirus is updated before connecting to the internet. With Palit SIM and other phishing scams being more rampant, make sure you are able to spot warning signs.
