MMK March 4: Jodie Sta. Maria Is A Mom With A Purpose In Baby For Sale

Desperate times call for desperate measures. This is what people say in times of dire need but is this acceptable when it comes to motherhood? Maalaala Mo Kaya’s March 4 episode entitled, Baby For Sale, hopes to share some valuable insight in the light of those famous words. Jodie Sta. Maria and Raymond Bagatsing’s complicated relationship in the story will reveal how a mother fulfills her purpose even after selling her own child to the child’s own father.

Jodie Sta. Maria’s Life Has A Bad Start

At a young age, Marie witnesses how her father, Eric, sells drugs to unknown visitors in their home. Her mom, Linda, has no choice but to support his livelihood because it is what puts food on the table. This family set up helped them survive but things got bad when Eric leaves the family for another. Linda was bitter and took it all out on Marie. From being caring, Linda became angry and hurtful towards her daughter, Marie. Their relationship as mother and daughter turned sour. Marie grew up physically and emotionally abused until she was seventeen years old.

The day came when Marie could not take it anymore. She ran away from home and decided to live with a man named Hector. They and have a child together. As time went by, Marie sees that Hector is not who she thinks and hopes he would be. He was not responsible as a father and husband. He was a drunk and is not able to stay long enough in any job. One night they get into a deadly fight and once again, Marie flees. This time, she goes back home to her mother.

Forgiveness Brings Restoration for Jodie Sta. Maria

It was not difficult for Linda to forgive her daughter. Even after expressing how she felt after Marie left her, she forgave her daughter wholeheartedly. Marie is thankful and the mother and daughter slowly settle into a peaceful home. They take turns taking care of the children and working to make ends meet. But Marie finds it difficult to achieve normalcy.

Hector shows up in their home time and again, harassing Marie. In the effort to end things once and for all, Marie agrees to meets Hector’s family to settle things. Being the liar he is, Hector took advantage of Marie, violated her and once again left her pregnant.

Marie is desperate. She wants to have an abortion but her mother said that abortion is a sin. She tells Marie that the child is innocent and deserves to live. Linda says that a mother should always love and always stand up for her children no matter how imperfect a parent may be. Marie decides to keep the child even if their life is a struggle. In addition, Hector is still a threat and she is fearful because of this. She wants to move to Bohol to start anew but to do that, they need money.

Jodie Sta. Maria Agrees to be a Babymaker for a Better Life

The answer to Marie’s needs entails great compromise. She visits a man named, Roy, who wants to have a child of his own. His wife is unable to bear a child and urges him to consider adoption. Roy does agree and is adamant at having a child of his own even if it means having another woman give birth to a child for him. That woman is Marie.

Roy and Marie agree to have a child but their terms are specific. Roy will support Marie until she gives birth and he will give her a house to live in while she is pregnant. He will also give the money she needs to move to Bohol. In turn, Roy will have the child he wants. They both used each other and the situation to get what they want.

Linda finds this situation unacceptable. To her, Marie’s decision means giving away a child of her own for the sake of a better life with her other children. Linda makes her point and begs her daughter not to push through with it. She tells her not to give away her child with Roy.

Jodie Sta. Maria’s Heart as a Mother Prevails

When Marie gives birth to Roy’s son, Jacob, she is pained by the thought of giving her son away. She cannot sleep finding it hard to go on. She admits that she cannot live with her son.

On the other hand, Roy and his wife seemed happy with Jacob at first. But Roy’s wife knew that Jacob was not adopted and is, in fact, his own son. She felt gravely betrayed which caused her to reject Roy. He said that Roy was insensitive, only thinking about himself. The wife then forces Roy to make a decision – her or the child. Roy chose Jacob and so his wife leaves him.

Roy calls back Marie because he is unable to care for the child on his own. Marie takes the opportunity to talk intently about Jacob and tells Roy that what they did was not right. She convinces Roy to give Jacob back to her. He agrees and promises to continue to support her and their son. He will visit them regularly and will be sure to part of their son’s life althroughout.

With everything that has happened, Marie vows to make the right decisions hereafter. She will dedicate her life to raising her three children without compromising anymore.
