Popcorn Movie Mix August 2: Baby Driver, Kidnap, Wind River, Amityville The Awakening

Ansel Elgort stars in action thriller "Baby Driver"

“Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day” – If you look into the eyes of those who are deprived of warmth and sunshine, you would definitely get that Rain-Rain-Go-Away vibe. This rhyme is practically the monsoon-inspired anthem these days. It is a good thing, however, that this week’s movie playlist makes the season easier to bear because, dear couch potatoes, you will have a little bit of everything – the need-for-speed car chases, the heavily dramatic and the seriously horrific.

Staying in the cinema is the best remedy for those times when you get stuck, cold and stranded. Simply choose which movie to keep you company. For adrenaline junkies and Spotify playlist curators, “Baby Driver” will surely be the best film for you. For those who are into pressing societal issues, then Halle Berry in “Kidnap” and  “Wind River” with Jeremy Renner are the best picks. Finally, for those who feel they prefer getting scared out of wits to counter the gloom, then “Amityville: The Awakening” may be effective. So, let the chills, thrills and scares begin!

Movie Mix August 2: A Thrilling Jukebox Car Chase, a Relentless Mother, a Native American Murder and a Haunted House

Director Edgar Wright did everything right with “Baby Driver.” First of all, he featured his favorite movie car chases and heists. Second, the film feels like a musical through an adrenaline pumping action thriller! In every scene, a song is played and when music is not playing, you will hear “Baby’s tinnitus ringing in the background. Basically, the story is embedded in Baby’s playlist and is told from his POV. This is also why Ansel Elgort is The Man in his role as “Baby.” Baby is a young lad with a hearing problem. The irony is, music instantly turns him into the most daring, dauntless and witty getaway driver of Doc, a crime boss he is paying his debt to. Things change when Baby meets a lady named Deborah. Will Baby continue in the heists he cannot seem to be free of, or will he risk everything to live his own life? The movie stars Hollywood favorites Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, and Eiza Gonzales.

Halle Berry is a relentless mother who does everything she can to find her kidnapped son. “Kidnap” is a film directed by Luis Prieto and tells the story of Karla Dyson (Halle) and how her son, Frankie (Sage Correa) gets kidnapped. One seemingly normal afternoon, Karla and Frankie go to the carnival for some mother-and-son time. Karla briefly leaves to answer a phone call, then, all of a sudden, Frankie gets dragged into a Mustang leaving Karla terrified. She quickly drives her car and chases the abductors endlessly. No matter how dangerous things get, she is adamant at bringing her son back home.

Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen star in a film about murder in “Wind River.” When Cory Lambert (Jeremy), a US Fish and Wildlife Service agent, finds a body in the Wind River Indian Reservation,  the FBI had to step in sending Jane Banner (Elizabeth). To help solve the case, she asks Cory for assistance as a tracker. The deeper they get into the case, the more violence is discovered. The film’s director, Taylor Sherdian, won Best Director at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for this. He was also nominated for Cannes Categories “Prix Un Certain Regard” and “Caméra d’Or.”

“Amityville: The Awakening” is a film of strange and dark phenomena. A single mother decides to move into a new house with her three children to cut down on expenses but find themselves in need of salvation when strange things begin to happen in their supposed home. They did not know that the house they are in has a dark history. The film’s director and writer is Franck Khalfoun . It stars Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Mckenna Grace.
