Popcorn Movie Mix February 3: The Greatest Showman, Changing Partners, Paddington 2, A Better Tomorrow, Winchester

Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron star in "The Greatest Showman"

This week’s movie mix brings such an eccentricity making the well-known remark, “There’s something for everyone,” a bit underrated. When it comes to the grandiosity of theater and music, this week features “The Greatest Showman” and the Philippine’s very own “Changing Partners,” which is also based on a Filipino musical play. If, however,  what you need is some feel-good fuzzy family film, “Paddington 2” is definitely the best choice. For those into action and crime thrillers, China’s “A Better Tomorrow” would be an interesting option. And finally, if its cold shudders you’re looking for, “Winchester” can be just the thing.

So, if your week didn’t go really well, then perhaps you’d find some company as a weary couch potato in any of these worthy flicks. Make your way to the cinema, buy yourself a ticket and let the silver screen do what it does best.

Movie Mix February 3: Musicals, Animation, Crime, and Chills

Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya star in “The Greatest Showman.” Inspired by the story of American showman Phineas Taylor Barnum (P.T. Barnum), the film’s musicality and showmanship received much praise. It was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor – Musical or Comedy (Hugh Jackman) in the 75th Golden Globe Awards. One of the songs entitled, “This Is Me,” won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. The same song was nominated for the same in the 90th Academy Awards.

“Changing Partners” by Vincent de Jesus has gone from being a musical play to a musical film. The award-winning film produced by Cinema One Originals tells the story of Alex and Cris played by Agot Isidro, Jojit Lorenzo, Anna Luna and Sandino Martin. Incidentally, the four actors are the same actors in the stage version. “Changing Partners” was first seen as a staged reading in the Virgin Labfest XII at the CCP in June 2016. It then turned into a full-length play at the PETA Theater, which was produced by Munkeymusic. Finally, on November 2017, it reached the cinema. This is simply noteworthy and cinema buffs and musical-lovers everywhere will have the opportunity to experience this for themselves.pad

Paddington Bear does odd jobs to get the perfect 100th birthday gift for his Aunt Lucy in “Paddington 2.”  Paddington wants nothing else than to make his Aunt Lucy’s birthday extra special. He decides to work and save his wages for the perfect birthday gift – a pop-up book of London. Little did he know that a culprit wants just the same thing because of its mysterious clues. Things start getting awfully complicated when the pop-up book is stolen and the community that once loved Paddington thinks that he was behind the crime.

An estranged brother who is a former smuggler tries to fix his life and reaches out to his cop brother after getting out of prison in “A Better Tomorrow.” The Chinese action film directed by Ding Sheng is a remake of John Woo’s 1986 Hong Kong film that is also entitled,  “A Better Tomorrow.” Woo’s film was an influential landmark in Hong Kong action cinema. This year’s version stars Wang Kai, Ma Tianyu, and Darren Wang.

Helen Mirren, Jason Clarke, and Sarah Snook star in “Winchester.” Helen Mirren plays the role of Sarah Winchester – the widow of gun manufacturer William Winchester. Even if she inherited 20 million dollars, she feels this is not worth it, especially that she feels that the victims of her husband’s business seem to be out to get her. The film tells the story of the Winchester Mystery House.
