A Simple Favor

Your movie options this week are nothing less than satisfying! Depending on your mood week, you can definitely find something to relate to in the movie plots of the films “A Simple Favor,” “Tanabata’s Wife,” “Final Score,” “A-X-L,” “The Predator,” “Wheely,” and “The Hopeful Romantic.” With such a smorgasbord of movie sorts, there is definitely something for every type of movie buff out there!

Movie Mix September 12: A Smorgasbord of Must-See Films

“A Simple Favor” is a film about secrets and how everyone has them. The story revolves around the disappearance of a woman named Emily Nelson (Blake Lively). Her mom blogger friend, Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick), does everything she can to find out what exactly happened. The events of Emily’s disappearance is told from the perspectives of Stephanie, Emily’s husband, and Emily herself.

According to The Manila Standard, “Tanabata’s Wife” is one of the six finalists in this year’s ToFarm Film Festival that runs from September 12 to 18. The film stars Japanese actor Miyuki Kamimura as Tanabata and Mai Fanglayanas as Fasang. The Japan Foundation Manila and the University of the Philippines Film Institute pledged their support for this inspiring film that brings to life Sinai Hamada’s short story of the same name. The story is set to the 1920’s and is about a Japanese immigrant farmer, Tanabata, at the Trinidad Valley in the Mountain Province. He then meets and falls in love with Fasang, a young maiden from Bontok. They start a family and have a son of their own but differences in culture, language and personalities get in the way of their relationship. “Tanabata’s Wife” is directed by Charlson Ong and Lito Casaje.

“Final Score” is an action film that stars Dave Bautista, Ray Stevenson and Pierce Brosnan. The movie is about an ex-military soldier who will stop at nothing to save 35,000 people in a sports event when it is held captive by armed criminals in exchange for a ransom.

“A-X-L” is an adventure film about a bike rider named Miles who meets a robotic military dog named A.X.L. Even if A.X.L. is created with advanced A.I., he remains to have the heart of a true man’s best friend. The two form an unusual friendship and Miles will stop at nothing to protect his newfound friend. The film stars Alex Neustaedter.

“The Predator” pays homage to the Predator Film Series and is actually its fourth installment. The film tells the story of a group of mercenaries who protect a small town from predators who want to invade them. The movie directed by Shane Black stars actors Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, and Sterling Brown.

“Wheely” is an animated film about a rookie racer who gets demoted into a cabbie after a bad crash. As he tries his best to make his way up from the lower ranks, he meets Bella and tries to save her from an 18-wheeler truck who is behind a number of luxury car-napping stints.

“The Hopeful Romantic” is a romantic Filipino film that stars Pepe Herrera and Ritz Azul. In the film, Pepe is man named Jess, a valet parking attendant at The Manila Hotel. He is honest and most of all new to the intimacies of having a relationship. Ritz, on the other hand, plays the role of a woman of high society named “Veronica.” When the two meet, they find themselves in a complicated relationship that is far from the truth.
