Facebook started as a geeky college project by Harvard dropout Mark Zuckerberg. Later on, it grew into a multi-million company serving a third of the world’s population. On Thursday, Facebook launched a new addition to the social media site’s features; matchmaking.

After the backlash in April due to the data breach, Facebook recovers by launching a new feature. Zuckerberg claims that the new matchmaking feature will enable users to create “meaningful” and “life-long” relationships with other users.

5 Things To Know About The New Facebook Matchmaking Feature

1. Separate Profiles

Matchmaking has always been featuring connected accounts for easier sign-up. But this time, Facebook eliminates that setup. Instead, the feature will allow you to curate an entire separate profile specified for dating. Unlike Tinder, Match will not suggest your friends on Facebook to match up with you. The website will not post on your behalf on your Facebook timeline.

The recent social media data breach also influenced this setup. The company is still recovering from the backlash of loose data from their websites. “…the dating feature was built with privacy and security in mind from the start,” Zuckerberg said in an article from Inquirer.

2. Less ‘Lust,’ More ‘Love’

Tinder is a dating application known to hook up people by showing photos, age, and first names to its users. The feature does the opposite. The app makes sure that its users will not only go for hookups. Instead, users will find long and meaningful relationships through it.

Facebook will also borrow some of the world’s most-used dating apps’ features. This includes Tinder’s “name only” branding on their users’ profiles. But it will use the opt-in technology, which means that you can only use the feature if you want to. It does not mean that if you’re only on the website, you’re also online on the matchmaking feature.

3. Private Messages

Since the Facebook profile and matchmaking profile is separate, the messaging is also separate. This ensures that the users of the matchmaking service will not be able to contact their “prospects” via the Messenger and WhatsApp.

4. Filtered Profiles

Some dating apps use geotags to connect two people together. Geotags use GPS so it means only the users near where you are will be able to see your profile on the apps. Others use the data from Facebook to list down possible users in a circle. But this time, Facebook will rank profiles according to your preferences and likes. This provides accuracy in the matches to the profiles that you will see.

5. ‘Unlock’ Events

The new feature enables the use of events and groups, like on Facebook. But the events available are only within the city that you are in. After you checked in an event, it will “unlock” people who also checked in the same event. After which, you are now able to see their profiles and check them out.
