89th Academy Awards, Oscars 2017

Well, that happened. It’s been a night of landmark firsts and surprising upsets in this year’s Oscars. The 89th Academy Awards started off in full swing with talk show host Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue. Incredible performances from Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Sting, Auli’i Cravalho, and Lin-Manuel Miranda also added to a stellar night. But as always the real scene-stealers of the Oscars were the awards. Big winners include “La La Land” taking home 6 awards from its 14 nominations and “Moonlight” bringing in 3 awards from its 8 nominations (including Best Picture).

Oscars 2017: A Night Of Firsts

“Moonlight,” Barry Jenkins’ groundbreaking film about a gay black man’s journey of self-discovery, won Best Picture in a surprising upset over “La La Land.” The film’s victory was a landmark moment for both the African-American and LGBT communities and a celebration of diversity. “Moonlight” supporting actor Mahershala Ali also made history as the first Muslim to win an Oscar for an acting role. The film took home a third award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

“La La Land” nabbed six awards, coming away with the most wins of the night. Female lead Emma Stone won her first Oscar in the Best Actress category. Damien Chazelle was equally honored as the youngest winner of the award for Best Director at only 32 years old. “La La Land” also won awards in Production Design, Cinematography, Original Score, and Original Song.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” also made history as the first film in the Harry Potter franchise to win an Oscar (Best Costume Design). After three separate nominations over the years, Viola Davis finally won her first Oscar for her performance in “Fences” (Best Actress in a Supporting Role). And, to cap it all off, Kevin O’Connell broke his Oscar-losing streak (having been nominated 20 times without an award!) by winning Best Sound Mixing for “Hacksaw Ridge.”
