Psy Hits 10M Subscribers, First Asian To Receive Diamond Play Button From YouTube

South Korean singer Psy receives a big shiny diamond from YouTube for hitting 10M subscribers for his official account, official Psy. This big rock comes in the form of a big YouTube play button and is called the Diamond Creator Award also known as the Diamond Play Button. The Viral Star of 2012 is the first Asian to receive this award. Stars like Chris Brown, Rihanna, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, and Katy Perry are also recipients of this award. YouTube stars Fine Bros, Spinnin’ Records, Ian Hecox, Anthony Padilla and more also got it in 2015.

Psy a.k.a Park Jae-Sang a singer, rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is popularly known for bringing “Gangnam Style” on the airwaves. The song became such a hit most especially when the music video came out and hit over 1 billion views on YouTube. This is the fist video to ever reach that number. He became a name known worldwide and was since then known to be the “King Of YouTube.”

On May 28, the Psy posted a video of him receiving the Diamon Play Button which came in a case labeled with the official YouTube logo. Watch the video below. According to AllKPop, Psy is the first Asian to hit and exceed 10M subscribers.

YouTube awards usually come in a plaque. If an account reaches 100,000 subscribers, one receives a plaque for the Silver Creator award. If an account reaches 1M, a larger plaque with a gold YouTube play button is given. The highest award is the one with the diamond play button which was given to Psy. This award was unveiled in July 2015.

In the video, Psy opens the case and finds the big shiny diamond. The name of his official account on YouTube was engraved at the back of the play button. He thanked YouTube for being his bridge to bring his music all across the globe for 10 years. He said, “I would like to thank the 10M subscribers who are following my account and also thank YouTube for connecting me to 10M fans and sending me this Diamond Play Button.”
