The Philippines dominated the 21st World Championships of Performing Arts held at the Terrace Theatre in Long Beach, California from July 1-19. Child dance prodigy Nhikzy Calma and Vocalist Cristiani Rebada were hailed as Grand Champions. Team PH won a total of 205 medals in what is considered the “Olympics of Performing Arts.” This puts the Philippines on a pedestal as a country flourishing in world-class artistry.

Team Philippines prides itself with 11 finalists, 22 division plaques, and seven industry awards. Highly sought-after scholarships from Indasoul records, Shelly Sondheim, Millenium Dance and the New York Film Academy were also awarded to the Filipino delegates. The said 205 medals includes 58 gold medals, 99 silver and 48 bronze. National director Jerry Mercado led the team to victory for the second time earning the award for this year’s Outstanding National Director.

ASAP Child Star Nhikzy Calma and Negrense Vocalist Cristiani Rebada Are Grand Champions of the World

The eight-year-old dance prodigy was truly a crowd favorite during the competition. He got his game on impressing the judges with his performances to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” with the moonwalk, of course. He garnered two awards – Junior Champion for Dance Solo and Grand Champion Performer of the World. Negrense Vocalist Cristiani Rebada, on the other hand, is also the Grand Champion Performer of the World after a groundbreaking vocal performance. This is Cristiani’s second win.

Delegates from Davao City and Negros make a mark in PH win. Of all the medals won, the delegates from Davao City garnered the most medals with 23 winning acts. According to Sunstar, among the winners, two Negrense singers stood out. Aside from grand champion Cristiani, Lordcint Agbas Moratilla of La Castellana also won a gold medal and two silver medals. La Castellana Mayor Rhumyla Nicor Mangilimutan said that she is “very proud of the boy from her town” and that this accomplishment brought the name of La Castellana on top of the world.

The WCOPA is a convergence of the best entertainers in the world competing for prestige and sought-after scholarships worth $400,000. The Asian Journal reports that the competition gives equal opportunities to aspiring performers to showcase their talents before talent scouts and industry leaders.  The competition is held yearly in Long Beach in the search for the best artists in acting, dancing, modeling, singing, instrumentals and other categories. Only 60 seconds are given to each performer to impress the panel of celebrity judges.
