Toledo City, Cebu, First Fibr City

The Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Company chose Toledo City in Cebu as the first “Fibr City” in the Philippines. Netizens of Toledo City will soon take advantage of world-class internet connectivity with PLDT’s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) facilities.  More of these will be set up in strategic urban locations in the Philippines.

What is Fiber Optic Internet Connection?

Before going further, here’s a bit of fiber optic internet connection is. Fiber Optic internet is the future of broadband. This is currently used by international telephone operators in the US, UK, and more. It is the most advanced broadband service that connects to the home through fiber-optic lines.

This just means faster internet and communication service. The reason being it passes through an optical fiber line compared to that of a cable internet that is shared. As compared to a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), fiber optic internet connection is an upgrade that has a speed ranging from 50 Mbps to 1 Gbps.

Toledo City In Cebu is First Fibr City Powered by PLDT

The Manila Times reported that PLDT has partnered with the Toledo City government for the FTTH to serve the data connectivity needs of the city. Toledo City is a fast-growing city because of its mining industry and its class A tourism sector.

PLDT FVP and head of Home Business Oscar Reyes Jr. in the report said, “Fitted with the country’s most powerful broadband, Toledo City will now have access to fiber-fast internet speeds of as much as 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps).”

The report further said that PLDT Home’s decision to power Toledo City with Fibr is part of the company’s expansion plans in Central Philippines.

3 Things You Should Know About PLDT Fibr in the PH

1. PLDT has already reached 2.8 million homes at the of 2016. PLDT Home website shows the areas where PLDT Fibr is available. They call it “Fibr Villages” and shows buildings powered by Fibr which they call “Fibr Buildings.” Numerous areas are already on the list which covers Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. 2. 4.4 million homes will be serviced in 2017. In the same report, it was stated that this year, PLDT will be expanding the reach of the FTTh network. Eighty percent is equivalent to 4.4 million homes will be passed before the year ends.

3. PLDT invested billions in bringing FTTH to the Philippines. The same report says PLDT has invested P300 billion in the last 10 years for the Fibr infrastructure. It now has 150,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables to its fixed line and mobile networks.
