The last screening week of February definitely has a movie marathon-worthy line up. War Biopic ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ Features Anti-War Soldier Andrew Garfield
The film is directed by Mel Gibson. It tells of how and why a pacifist combat medic, Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), got awarded with a Medal of Honor. The story is set in the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. The irony of his life in refusing to carry or use a firearm shows that there is much more to being a war hero. Hacksaw Ridge was nominated for six Oscars in the recent 89th Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Andrew Garfield.
Journalist Chloe Grace Moretz Breaks Down in ‘Brain on Fire’
The American-Canadian-Irish drama is based on a memoir written by Susannah Calahan entitled, “Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness.” Jenny Slate, Thomas Mann, Tyler Perry, Charrie-Anne Moss and Richard Armitage stars alongside Chloe Grace recounting how Susannah, a journalist for the New York Post, quickly progresses from being a healthy young woman to entering a state of catatonia. Susannah wakes up after a series of tests and misdiagnoses in hospitalization. She does not remember anything at all about the month that has passed.
‘Hidden Figures’ Features Unpopular NASA Mathematicians
Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae and Taraji Henson star as African-American NASA Mathematicians Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson whose contributions were pivotal to the US Space Program in 1961. The film stars Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Glen Powell and Mahershala Ali. It was nominated for three Oscars – Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer. The non-fiction film features the music of Hans Zimmer and Pharrel Williams.
Jackie Chan Returns as a Freedom Fighter in ‘Railroad Tigers’
Jackie Chan stars in this action comedy film directed by Ding Sheng. Its plot is sort of like that of Robin Hood where a railroad worker leads a group of freedom fighters that opposes the Japanese to get food for the poor in 1941. This movie is the third collaboration between Jackie and Director Sheng. Jackie’s son, Jaycee, stars in the film.
Ice Cube and Charlie Day Get Dirty in a School ‘Fist Fight’
High school teachers Ice Cube and Charlie Day get into a fist fight. One of them gets laid off from their job. In the comedy film, Ice Cube is History teacher Mr. Ron Strickland and Charlie Day is the English Teacher, Mr. Andy Campbell. One of them gets fired after a series of pranks by senior high students.
